국문 초록

본고는 1999년 독일 지성계 최대 화두였던 철학자 슬로터다이크(P. Sloterdijk)의 엘마우城강연을 중심으로 그가 던진 휴머니즘과 교육의 문제를 고찰하고 있다. “인간 농장을 위한 규칙”이라는 제목으로 행해진 이 강연은 전통적 개념의 휴머니즘, 즉 “독서사회로서 휴머니즘”이 이제 종언을 고하고 있다는 주장과 아울러 새로운 시대에 어울릴 새로운 휴머니즘이 필요하다는 제안을 담고 있다. 우생학적 발상과 관련이 있어 보이는 이 새로운 휴머니즘 구상에 대해 당시의 언론계와 지성계는 심각한 우려와 비판을 보였다는 사실이 본고의 전반부에서 보고되고 있다. 여기서 한 걸음 더 나아가, 본고의 후반부에서는 슬로터다이크가 제안한 이른바 포스트휴머니즘의 기획에 기반한 교육, 즉 “사육으로서 교육”이 전통적 교육 개념의 대안으로 혹은 미래교육의 방향으로 적절한가에 대한 논의가 이루어진다.

영문 초록

This study investigates the question of humanism and education in the speech “Rules for the Human Park” by Peter Sloterdijk, a German philosopher, at the Castle Elmau in Bayern 1999. In this speech he insisted that the traditional concept of humanism as “letterwriting and bookreading” has now come to an end and he suggests that a new concept of humanism (“posthumanism”) for a new era is needed. However the press and the intellectual society has shown a deep concern and skepsis on his idea, as he refers the “clever connection of ethics and genetics” and Zarathustra and Übermensch by Nietzsche. The so called Sloterdijkscandal or scandalization is reported briefly in the first half of this article. In the following part of this article, we will take one step further towards Sloterdijk’s suggestion for a conceptualization of education. The same skepsis of the press of two decades ago is also shared in the area of education, considering his statements on education. Basically he understands education as breeding, which is one of the mainstream ideas of the traditional pedagogy. But if his new humanism, namely posthumanism, includes the genetic intervention, and if the new concept of education is based on or combined with it, then we cannot guarantee the traditional or essential quality both of the human and education.
