영문 초록

This paper analyzes the dual identity of the Japanese residents in Joseon through the history book ‘Kokushi to Joseon’ of Nooki rennmei. Nooki rennmei was the representative group of Japanese residents in Korea. They were born away from their own country, in a colony. These people were positioned in an awkward place, which was between their own country, Government General and the Joseon people. This led them to have both sense of control along with anxiety. They had to sustain their sense of control through endless differentiation from the korean, and on the other hand they had to verify and express themselves as Japanese people who had the kokutai. Morita Yoshio, a second generation Japanese resident in Joseon wrote the ‘Kokushi to Joseon’. This book shows the clues to dual identity that the Japanese residents living in Joseon had. Throughout history, before the merging of Korea and Japan, Joseon and Japan were drawn as completely different nations. This difference was the point that sustained the boundary between them and the Korean. Coming into modern times, Japan led the switching of the world history and as Korea was merged into Japan, became one. Living in Joseon at the time, they focused on the Naeseon Ilchae issue that was still left behind and highlighted their role in it. They rejected the reactionism that was the universal explanation frame of the original colonial view of history, and while doing so they emphasized the importance of Joseon among the imperial expansion. This was only possible and necessary because they were Japanese residents in Joseon.
