왜 고산리식토기에 식물 비짐이 사용되었을까?

국문 초록

한국 신석기시대의 이른 시기로 편년되는 고산리식토기는 바탕흙(태토)에 식물을 섞어 만들었을 뿐 아니라, 우리나라에서는 제주도에서만 발견된다는 점에서 큰 주목을 받아왔다. 최근 연구에서 식물규산체분석을 통해 그것의 종류가 벼과 식물로 밝혀진 바 있다. 그리고 식물을 비짐으로 쓸 경우 성형하기 쉽고 무게가 가볍기 때문에, 고산리식토기는 음식의 조리에 일회용으로 사용한 후 폐기된 것이라는 견해가 피력되었다. 그러나 토기 제작에서 섞음재인 비짐은 바탕흙의 종속 요인이므로 다양한 종류의 비짐 중에서 유독 식물이 선택된 이유를 무엇보다도 바탕흙과 관련하여 살펴보는 것이 타당할 것이다. 이런 배경에서 필자들은 고산리유적, 오등동유적, 강정동유적, 김녕리유적의 고산리식토기와 유적지 주변에서 채취한 토양을 대상으로 물리적, 광물학적, 지구화학적 분석을 체계적으로 종합하여 진행하였다. 분석 결과를 검토해 보면 식물을 섞음재로 사용한 이유는 유적별로 차이가 있다고 추정된다. 즉 고산리유적의 경우는 지질환경 요소인 바탕흙의 특성과 밀접한 관계가 있다고 해석되지만, 강정동유적, 오등동유적, 김녕리유적의 경우 환경보다는 제작전통 등의 요인이 더 작용했을 것으로 추정된다.

영문 초록

The Gosan-ri-type pottery(GTP), known as the early period of the Neolithic age in Korea, has received a great deal of attention not only because it was made by mixing plants in the raw materials, but also uniquely found in Jeju Island. Through recent study by phytolith analysis of GTP, it has been identified the plant type belongs to the family Poaceae. As plant tempering facilitates convenient and feasible ceramic production, including quick shaping and efficient drying, GTP wares were postulated as casual cooking vessels which were more suited to migratory lifestyle. However, the background of selecting plant temper should be preferentially examined with relation to local clay raw materials because tempers are minor factor in pottery manufacture. In this context, physical, mineralogical and geochemical analyses on GTP from Gosan-ri, Odeung-dong, Gangjeong-dong and Gimnyeong-ri as well as collected soil in situ were systematically conducted. The results of analyses show that the reasons for using plant temper differ between the Gosan-ri site and other sites (Odeung-dong site, Gangjeong-dong site and Gimnyeong- ri site). That is, the Gosan-ri site was closely related to raw material as a part of the geological environment, whereas other sites are assumed to be under the influence of cultural factors such as manufacturing tradition.
