과학고등학교 학생의 월령효과 분석 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 과학고등학교 수준에서 입학-재학-졸업 이후 각 단계별 성취에서 월령효과가 발휘되는지 분석한 것이다. 수도권 소재 과학고등학교에서 발간한 20년사와 30년사에 수록된 졸업생 명부에 병기된 생년월일을 바탕으로 2,055명을 봄(3-6월), 여름(7-10월), 겨울(11-2월) 3집단으로 분류하고 교차분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 과학고 입학 단계에서의 월령효과는 뚜렷하였다. 특히 서울, 경기, 인천, 강원까지 선발 지역이 확대되어 우수한 학생들의 입학 경쟁이 치열하였던 시기와 경시대회, 올림피아드 실적을 반영하였던 특별전형 시기에 월령효과는 더욱 두드러지게 나타났다. 이는 영재교육원, 특목고의 학생 선발에서 월령효과가 뚜렷하였던 선행 연구의 결과를 지지한다. 둘째, 과학고 재학 중의 성취(올림피아드 수상, 창의적 산출물), 졸업 후 대학 진학, 박사학위 취득은 월령효과가 유의미하지 않았다. 셋째, 과학고 재학 중 리더십 영역의 경우 월령효과가 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 초등학교 저학년일수록 월령에 따른 성숙도가 두드러지게 차이가 나는데 이 시기에 발휘된 ‘기회’ 요인이 과학고에까지 이어진 것으로 보인다. 본 연구를 통해 특목고 입시에서 고난도의 선발 시험과 높은 경쟁률은 월령효과를 현실화시키는 제도적 장치로 작용할 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 아울러 특정 변인에 대해 편차(분산)가 큰 이질 집단일수록 해 당 변인에 대해 월령효과가 유의미하게 나타날 가능성이 높으므로 월령효과를 분석할 때는 단순히 어떤 변인이 월령효과에 유의미하다 또는 유의미하지 않다고 해석하기에 앞서 집단의 특성이나 분포, 측정도구에 대한 면밀한 검토가 먼저 이루어져야 한다는 점을 발견할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This research analyzes monthly age effect on Science high school students at three stages (entrance, undergraduate, postgraduate), based on their achievements during each stage. 2,055 of the last thirty years’ graduates of a science high school in capital area were divided into three groups based on their birthdate, (spring[march-June], summer[July-October], winter[November-February]), then cross examination was conducted. Based on the examination, monthly age effect at the entrance stage was clearly visible. Monthly age effect was specially distinct during the period when they accepted applications from more areas including Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, and Gangwon, or during special admission period when they considered students’ performance on academic competitions or Olympiads. This supports preceding studies that showed clear monthly age effect on dmission selection of specialized high schools for the gifted or gifted education centers affiliated with universities. Second, the effect did not play a significant role at the undergraduate stage and the post graduate stage. This means the monthly age effect at the entrance stage lasts until the postgraduate stage. Third, at undergraduate stage, monthly age effect was significant on leadership ability. Being born earlier than other kids put them at a developmental advantage during their first years in elementary school, and increase of opportunity due to the advantage was shown to have a lasting effect. This research has shown that manifestation of monthly age effect in special-purpose high school admissions can be attributed to their challenging entrance exam and low admission rate. Furthermore, monthly age effect on a variable is likely to appear more significant in a group with a larger dispersion of the variable. Therefore, careful examination of a group’s distribution, dispersion, and measurement tools must be prioritized before the interpretation of a certain variable’s significance on monthly age effect.
