학습공동체 참여가 대학생 학습 성과에 미치는 영향:

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 대학생의 학습공동체 참여가 학습 성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하고, 그 영향의 정도가 학생의 사회경제적 배경에 따라 차이가 있는지를 규명하는 것이다. 한국대학교육협의회와 학부교육선도대학 협의회가 공동으로 수행한「2015년 학부교육 실태조사(K-NSSE)」자료를 분석에 활용하였다. 표본은 100개 대학에 재학 중인 72,893명의 학생이다. 종속 변인은 대학생의 학습 성과이며, 학생들이 대학에 다님으로써 향상되었다고 인식한 글쓰기, 비판적 사고, 문제 해결력, 통계적 분 석 등 인지적 학습 성과와 협동 역량, 다양성 이해, 교양 시민, 가치관 및 윤리관 형성 등 사회․정서적 학습 성과로 구성되었다. 연구 변인은 학습공동체 참여, 조절 변인은 대학생의 사회경제적 배경이다. 학습공동체 참여 효과를 엄밀히 추정하기 위해 경향점수매칭을 활용하였으며, 분석에는 다층모형 분석을 적용하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 학습공동체 참여는 학생의 개인 특성과 학습참여 행동, 대학 특성 등의 영향을 통제한 후에도 대학생의 인지적, 사회․정서적 성과에 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 학습공동체 참여가 비판적 사고력 향상 및 가치관 및 윤리관 확립에 미치는 효과는 고소득층 학생에게 크게나타났다. 이를 제외하면 나머지 학습 성과에 대해서는 대학생의 사회경제적 배경에 따른 학습공동체 참여의 조건적 효과는 대체로 유의하지 않았다. 즉 학습공동체 참여는 취약계층 학생들에게도 학습 성과 향상에 있어 효과적이었다. 그러나 저소득층 대학생들이 학습공동체 참여가 저조하고 학습성과도 대체로 낮다는 결과를 함께 고려하면, 현재로서의 학습공동체는 사회계층에 따른 학습 성과 의 격차를 보완하는 역할에 있어 한계가 있는 것으로 해석된다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 한 논의와 정책적 시사점을 결론에 제시하였다.

영문 초록

With an ever-growing concern over learning outcomes, an increasing number of universities and colleges are adopting learning communities as one of their high impact practices. However, little is known about the effects of participation in these activities on learning outcomes of students. This study investigated empirical evidence regarding the relationship between participation in learning communities and learning outcomes. The study also examined whether the effects differ by socio-economic status of students. The samples consisted of 72,893 students from 100 Korean universities across the nation. Dependent variables included a) writing skills, b) critical thinking, c) problem solving skills, d)statistical analysis skills, e) collaborative competencies, f) attitude about openness to diversity, g) citizenship, and h) values and ethics development of students. Independent variables were the student s SES and whether to participate in learning communities. The student s SES were also included as the moderator of the relationship between participation in learning communities and learning outcomes. The data were collected from various sources including the 2015 K-NSSE(Korean National Survey of Student Engagement) database and the Higher Education Information Disclosure System. Considering the hierarchical nature of the data, the study employed a Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) statistical technique. To reduce the sample selection bias and estimate the effects of treatment by accounting for the covariates that predict receiving the treatment, the study employed the Propensity Scoring Matching (PSM) method. The study results are as follows. First, student s participation in learning communities were significantly and positively related to learning outcomes of students. Second, in most cases, there was no relationship between students SES and the effects of participation in learning communities on learning outcomes of students. Exceptions were that high SES participants showed greater increase in critical thinking and development of values and ethics. The study results provide two implications. First, to enhance learning outcomes of students, the universities may have to develop and implement effective learning communities on campus. Second, the universities may have to pay special attentionto low income students who may have difficulties in participating in these educational practices.
