국문 초록

본 연구는 국가 간 외교적 교류가 군사 분쟁에 미치는 영향에 관한 국제정치학 이론적 논의의 계량적 검증을 목적으로 한다. Correlates of War(COW) 프로젝트에서 제공하는 1816년부터 2001년까지의 외교교류(diplomatic exchanges)와 군사 분쟁(militarized interstate disputes)의 자료를 활용하여, 본 연구는 두 변수 간 상관관계를 분석하였다. 국가 간 외교교류가 군사 분쟁에 미치는 영향에 관한 기존 군사 분쟁 계량연구의 학문적 소홀을 지적하며, 본 연구는 외교교류와 군사 분쟁의 상관관계에 관한 국제정치학의 이론적 논의를 계량적으로 검증하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 분석결과, 국가 간 외교적 교류는 월츠(Waltz, 1979)의 이론적 주장과 부합되게 군사분쟁을 확대하는 경험적 증거가 드러나고 있다. 또한, 기존의 군사 분쟁 모델에서 소홀히 하였던 외교교류 변수의 설명력이 본 연구에서 증거되었으며, 외교교류 변수를 활용한 본 연구의 분석모델은 기존 군사 분쟁 분석모델의 설명력을 확대하는 결과가 증거되었다. 본 연구 분석의 결과는 국가 간 외교적 협력의 중요성, 외교협력과 군사협력의 상관관계에 기반을 둔 정책적 시사점을 제공한다.

영문 초록

This study examines theoretical arguments in international relations about the relationship between diplomatic exchange and militarized disputes among states. Using Militarized Interstate Disputes v4.1 (Palmer, D Orazio, Kenwick, and Lane 2015) and Diplomatic Exchanges v2006.1 (Bayer 2006) in the Correlates of War (COW) project for the period 1816 to 2001, this empirical study examines the causal relationships between diplomatic exchange and militarized disputes. This study argues that there is a lack of research on the effect of diplomatic exchange on disputes. We find that, as in theoretical arguments by Waltz (1979), diplomatic exchange tends to increase the probability that militarized disputes will occur among states. This study also finds that empirical models of militarized disputes that factor in diplomatic exchange statistically outperform or have greater explanatory power over models examined in previous studies on the topic. The findings in this study have important policy implications for diplomatic exchange and militarized disputes among states.
