국문 초록

베이트슨은 인공지능과 생명공학 등 우리 시대를 이름 짓는 기술중심주의 시대에서 유연하게 적응하고 창조적으로 살아가기 위해 필수적인 심미적 마음의 회로를 제시한다. 베이트슨에게 마음은 무한한 차이들이 선사하는 소식에 대한 반응과 표현들이 생각, 느낌, 의식 및 무의식 등 다양한 양태들의 총체로서, 자기-교정적 방식을 통해 복잡성(complexity) 속에서 일정한 패턴(pattern)을 지속적으로 창출하는 관계적 과정(relational process)을 의미한다. 이러한 베이트슨의 마음은 인간 의 영역을 넘어 삼나무 숲이나 산호초에서도 존재하며, 개체와 주위 환경과의 역동적 소통 속에서 발생하는 소통의 총체가 된다. 이렇게 모든 존재가 서로 연결되어 있으면 상호작용을 하고 있고 어떤 한 존재가 절대적으로 다른 존재들을 압도해 버리지 않고 함께 각 개체들의 고유성과 더 큰 마음과의 상호 연결성이 최적화되어 살아가는 생태적 관계망에 기반을 둔 그의 마음론은 자아의 의식을 특권화한 인간 중심주의를 넘어 인간을 포함한 ‘인간-너머’의 생태학적 마음론을 구축한다. 각 개체가 자신의 고유성을 확보하면서 타자성에 기반을 둔 생태학적 접속을 가능하게 하는 텅 빈 공간을 보존 또는 창조하는 베이트슨의 심미성은 상처받거나 억압된 의식들이 무의식의 형태로 저장된 “도움 받지 못한 의식”을 돌보고 창조적 인 감정이나 관념들로 전환시켜 주는 역할을 수행한다. 예술과 철학 등 다양한 삶의 표현 형식을 통해 작동하는 베이트슨의 심미적 마음의 회로는 복잡성과 우연성으로 가득 찬 환경 속에서 각 개체로 하여금 환경에 합당한 적응 및 창조를 수행 하면서 함께 이로운 생태학적 기쁨을 창출하는 수 있게 해 주는 삶의 원리로 작동한다.

영문 초록

In his theory on the ecology of the mind, Bateson formulates the notion of aesthetic circuits of the mind, which suggests a way to survive, adapt and live creatively in our contemporary techno-dominated society. For Bateson, the mind is the relational process that can create a constant and flexible pattern in the complex world, by processing and responding to information(which Bateson calls the “difference which makes a differences”) in a self-corrective way. This notion of the mind is the foundation of ecological communication, which occurs as a dynamic interaction between the infinite differences in life, and which flows from human and from their consciousness to any type of living system such as “cells, forests and civilizations.” Based on the assumption that all beings are interconnected and that they intercommunicate, this type of ecological communication affirms the singularity of each being in creating an interconnection with the larger mind, without positing the existence of an absolute and exceptional entity dominating other beings in the world of immanence. These circuits of the mind, embodying the ecological connection between each being and the larger mind, defy and overcome the limitations of human-centrism, which privileges the consciousness of the self(ego) and human supremacy. The core of Bateson s aesthetics is to create the void, which he calls “the sacred,” that is, an incalculable and non-communicable space that fosters ecological communication. This aesthetic has the power to heal the pathological features of the “unaided consciousness” in our minds and in the world, by caring for and transforming it into the foundation of creative thoughts, feelings and ideas. These aesthetic circuits of the mind, which may be expressed in the form of artworks, as well as in philosophy, education, social relations, science and cybernetics, hold exceptional wisdom as to how to live ecological life in which each being provides benefits to others and to the world.
