This research discusses the issue of thought in the modern Arabic poetry. The research emphasizes the link and overlap in the structure of the poem between thought and emotion. The issue of thought is not a matter of modern poetic construction. Al-Mutanabbi, Ibn al-Rumi, Abu Nuwas and Abu al-‘Ala al-Ma’ari were poets who were deeply known for their deep poetic experience. Therefore, the issue of thought belongs to old and modern poetry together, and it is not only restricted to modern poetry. The research presents the views of prominent critics and poets Salah Abdul Sabour and Adonis in this case. Abdul Sabour emphasized that the thought in ancient poetry comes through the verses of wisdom that are attached to the ends of poems, regardless of the subject and the purpose for which it is written. Adonis looked at this issue as part of his vision to the Arabic culture, which he sees as an oral culture that does not care about the issue of thought and considers it contrary to poetry. Adonis constantly calls for poetry to transcend the surface of the world and to become a source of knowledge. The research applies a comparison between a number of poems to determine the difference between the use of thought in the old poetry within its structure on one hand, and its use in modern poetry on the other.
