국문 초록

본 연구는 윤희수의 『대천일기』를 사례로 기후환경에 대처하는 농민의 태도와 기후속신의 의미를 재고(再考)하기 위해 기후환경이 농업에 미치는 영향, 농민의 기후인식 그리고 농업과 관련된 기후속신에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 농업은 기후환경에 절대적인 영향을 받는 산업이다. 때문에 농민은 장마나 가뭄이 계속될 때 그리고 장마 뒤 맑음이나 가뭄 뒤 비에 대해 상반된, 복합적인 감정을 가질 수밖에 없었다. 기후현상은 인간의 힘으로 조절할 수 없기 때문에 농민은 자연에 순응하고 때로는 극복하기 위해 노력하며 생업을 이어갔다. 풍흉 예조에 대한 기후속신은 오랜 관찰과 경험에 의해 형성되고 전승된 민간지식이었다. 날씨 예조에 대한 기후속신은 자연현상을 살피거나 세시풍속에 따라 날씨를 예측한 것으로서 과학지식이자 우리나라의 기후 특성에 따라 경험적으로 체득된 것이었다. 주술에 대한 기후속신은 기우제와 같은 종교적 의례 행위로 나타났는데 여기서 속신은 집단 구성원 전체가 인정하고 받아들인 ‘믿음’이었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to reconsider the attitude of farmers coping with the climate environment and the significance of climatic folk beliefs in Yoon Hee-Soo’s Daecheon diary. To this end, this study examines the effects of climate environment on agriculture, the climate cognition of farmers, and the climatic folk beliefs associated with agriculture. Agriculture is an industry that is heavily influenced by climate environment. Therefore, farmers are bound to have mixed feelings about a clear sky after a rain or a shower after a drought when rainy season or drought persist. Since the phenomenon of climate cannot be controlled by human power, farmers continued with their livelihood by adapting to and sometimes trying to overcome nature. The climatic folk beliefs of predicting a good or a bad harvest were folk knowledges formed and passed down from long observation and experience. The climatic folk beliefs of predicting weather were practiced by studying natural phenomena or forecasting weather according to seasonal customs. Thus, they were scientific knowledges and part of folk knowledges acquired experientially according to climate characteristics of Korea. The climatic folk belief of incantation was manifested in religious rituals such as rain calling ceremonies. Here, the folk belief was ‘a faith’ that the a community recognized and accepted.
