국문 초록

프란시스 튜레틴(Francis Turretin, 1623-1687)은 대표적인 개혁파 정통주의 신학자들 중 한 사람으로 17세기 개혁주의 신학의 발전에 큰 공헌을 한 인물 이었다. 하지만 튜레틴이 개혁주의 신학전통의 발전에 미친 영향과 공헌에도 불구하고, 개혁파 정통주의에 대한 현대 학계의 오해 및 부적절한 비판들과 함께 그의 사역과 저작들은 한동안 사람들의 관심 속에서 멀어지게 되었다. 튜레틴의 섭리론은 하나님의 절대주권을 강조하는 개혁주의 신학의 성격을잘 보여주는 사상으로 당시 그가 마주했던 로마 가톨릭, 아르미니우스주의, 소시니안주의와의 신학 논쟁에서 매우 핵심적인 부분을 차지했던 교리였다. 본 논문의 목적은 튜레틴의 섭리론과 특별히 그 중에서도 당시 치열한 논쟁의 주제였던‘하나님의 섭리와 죄의 원인의 관계성’에 대한 튜레틴의 견해를 연구함으로써 그의 사상을 조명하고 이를 통해 17세기 개혁파 정통주의에 대한 기존 학계의 비평을 변증하는 데 있다. 튜레틴의 섭리 교리는 개혁주의 섭리 론에 대한 비평가들의 결정론적 해석과는 달리 인간의 자유를 파괴하거나 인간을 하나님의 꼭두각시와 같은 존재로 만들고 있지 않으며, 더 나아가 튜레 틴의 섭리론이 세상의 모든 일이 신의 뜻대로 발생한다는 하나님의 절대주권을 강조함에도 불구하고 하나님을 죄의 조성자나 원인자로 만들지 않는다.

영문 초록

Fraincis Turretin (1623-1687) is one of the representative Reformed orthodox theologians who contributed to the development of the seventeenth century Reformed theology. Nevertheless, in spite of his influence on the development of Reformed theological tradition, his theological ideas have not received a proper attention from previous scholarship. Turretin’s doctrine of providence is one such case. However, Turretin’s doctrine of providence is one of the ideal places to study his ideas because it discusses highly provocative theological issues such as whether divine providence makes God author of sin. Therefore, this study will deal with Turretin’s doctrine of providence, focusing on his understanding of the cause of sin. The main goal of this study is first to contribute to an understanding of Turretin’s view of providence and second to provide an evaluation regarding the validity of previous scholarship pertaining to Reformed teaching of divine providence. In particular, concerning the latter, this study will show two things. First, the examination of Turretin’s discussion of the relation between divine providence and human freedom defies the previous scholarship’s myth that the Reformed teaching of divine providence makes human beings a senseless stone or tree trunk. Second, in his view, contrary to the modern scholarship’s accusation, Reformed doctrine of providence and sin does not make God the author of sin at all.
