국제다각화 기업의 특성에 관한 연구 : 소유집중도 및 연구개발활동을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 소유집중도 및 연구개발비중 등의 기업특성들과 국제다각화 수준 간의 관계를 분석 하였다. 기업이 해외 각국에 자회사를 두고 전 세계적으로 사업활동을 수행하는 국제다각화 수준을 정교하게 측정하기 위해서는 국가별 해외자회사 사업규모에 대한 정보가 필요하다. 이에 본 연구는 국제회계기준에 따라 연결재무제표 주석에 공시된 종속회사 정보를 바탕으로 기업의 전체 자산이 여러 국가에 분산되어 있는 정도를 나타내는 엔트로피 지수를 활용하여 국제다각화 수준을 측정하였다. 이를 바탕으로 기업의 소유집중도와 연구개발비중이 국제다각화에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과, 최대주주에 지분이 집중된 정도가 클수록 국제다각화 수준은 낮아지는 반면 연구개 발비 지출이 큰 기업일수록 국제다각화 수준이 높은 관계가 발견된다. 또한 해외자회사 소재지 국가의 경제 및 제도적 환경과의 관계를 검토한 결과, 소유집중도는 해외자회사 설립 국가 결정에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않지만, 연구개발비중이 높은 기업일수록 개발도상국보다는 선진국에 자회 사를 보유하는 경향이 보다 더 큰 것으로 나타난다. 본 연구는 국제다각화에 대한 개선된 측정방 법을 바탕으로 기업의 해외진출 여부 및 국가 결정에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대한 새로운 실증결 과를 제시하였다는 점에서 기업의 국제화 전략 수립 및 정책 마련에 공헌한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the association between the international diversification and the firm characteristics including the ownership concentration and the R&D intensity. International diversification, which means multinational corporate activities through various foreign subsidiaries all over the world, can be measured reliably only by way of reflecting the detailed information on foreign subsidiaries. Accordingly, this study measures the degree of international diversification in terms of an entropy score that indicates the level of dispersion of foreign assets across the world, using the information on subsidiaries as disclosed on the consolidated financial statements under the International Financial Reporting Standards. The empirical test results using the new measure of international diversification show that firms with higher ownership concentration by the major shareholders have lower level of international diversification, while R&D spendings are positively association with international diversification. Additional analysis on the influence of foreign country characteristics shows that the ownership concentration does not have significant association with the economic and social environment of the foreign countries, but R&D intensive firms tend to prefer advanced countries with high level of economic and institutional stability for the location of their foreign subsidiaries. This study contributes to the literature and also has policy implications by providing new empirical evidence on the firm characteristics to affect the corporate decisions on whether and where to operate foreign subsidiaries, based on the improved measure on international diversification.
