중국 ‘世說體’ 소설의 국내 유입과 수용

국문 초록

劉義慶의 《世說新語》 인기로 魏晉時代 이후 淸代에 이르기까지, 《世說新語》의 체례를 본뜬 ‘世說體’ 소설들이 많이 간행되었다. 그 작품 중에서 국내에 유입된 작품은 총 여섯 작품으로 《世說新語》ㆍ《何氏語林》ㆍ《世說新語補》ㆍ《皇明世說新語》ㆍ《今世說》ㆍ《宋艶》 등이 있었다. 통일신라시대 국내로 유입된 《世說新語》의 꾸준한 인기는 조선시대 《世說新語補》의 국내 유입으로 이어지고, 많은 수요자들이 생겨남에 따라 필사본으로 그 요구를 감당해 낼 수 없었다. 그래서 1708년 肅宗 34年 왕실의 실록을 간행하는 현종실록자로 《世說新語補》 20券 6冊本과 20券 7冊本을 출판하기에 이른다. 그 후 《世說新語補》를 더욱 효과적으로 읽어내기 위해 기존 《世說新語補》 판본의 체재와는 완전히 다르게 편집한 《世說新語姓彙韻分》까지 간행하게 되었다. 《世說新語姓彙韻分》은 《世說新語補》를 해체해서 성씨를 기준으로 새롭게 정리해서 출판한 작품인데, 이런 사실은 당시 지식인들이 얼마나 《世說新語補》에 빠져있었는지를 잘 대변해 주고 있다. 이미 조선시대 지식인들 사이에서 《世說新語補》에 대한 연구가 어느 정도 이루어졌기 때문에 나름대로 분류도 하고 새로운 형식의 책을 만들어낼 수 있었을 것이다. 이러한 사회분위기는 17세기 許筠을 통해 국내로 유입이 된 《皇明世說新語》까지 유행하여 출판까지 이루어지게 되는 상황을 만들어 냈을 것으로 추정한다. 이웃하고 있던 커다란 공간의 나라에서 동시대를 살고 있던 지식인들의 삶을 엿볼 수 있는 귀한 자료이기에 세설체 소설은 문인들 사이에서 인기를 끌 수 있었던 것이다.

영문 초록

Owing to the popularity of Shishuoxinyu(世說新語), a lot of published novels followed stylistic rules of Shishuoxinyu(世說新語), so-called ‘shishuoti(世說體)’, from the Wei Chin Dynasty(魏晉時代) to the Qing(淸) Dynasty. Six among them were introduced to Korea and they are Shishuoxinyu(世說新語), Heshiyulin(何氏語林), Shishuoxinyubu(世說新語補), HuangmingShishuoxinyu(皇明世說新語), Jinshishuo(今世說), and Songyan(宋艶). Shishuoxinyu(世說新語) was introduced to Korea during the Unified Silla Period and it led to the import of Shishuoxinyubu(世說新語補) in the Joseon Dynasty. Since there was too much demand, it would be almost impossible to cope with the demand with manuscripts. Therefore, Hyunjong Annals type, which was used to publish the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, was used to publish 20 volumes and 6 issues and 20 volumes and 7 issues of Shishuoxinyubu(世說新語補), in 1708, King Sukjong 34year. In order to read Shishuoxinyubu(世說新語補) more effectively, Shishuoxinyuxinghuiyunfen(世說新語姓彙韻分) was published and it was a newly edited book unlike the system of the conventional woodblock-printed Shishuoxinyubu(世說新語補). Shishuoxinyuxinghui yunfen(世說新語姓彙韻分) was published after decomposing Shishuoxinyubu(世說新語補) and newly arranging it based on the surnames. It clearly shows that how intellectuals at that time fell in the Shishuoxinyubu(世說新語補). It indicated that the intellectuals of the Joseon Dynasty studied Shishuoxinyubu(世說新語補) to the high level so they could categorize it and create a new book out of it. The social atmosphere is supposed to make HungmingShishuoxinyu(皇明世說新語), which was introduced to Korea by Gyun Heo in the 17th century, popular and, consequently, published. It could have been popular among the literati because it was valuable material helped them to peak into the contemporary lives of the literati living in a neighboring big country.
