보조사상과 교학의 관계에 대한 연구 동향 - 화엄교학을 중심으로 -

국문 초록

이 글은 보조사상연구원 설립 30주년을 맞이하여 그간 연구원이 수행한 다양한 연구 활동 가운데 교학과의 관계를 중심으로 보조사상 연구를 회고 하고 전망한 것이다. 이를 위해서 먼저 그 기준이 되는 개념들, ‘보조사상 연구’와 ‘보조사상연구원’ 그리고 ‘회고’와 ‘전망’ 등에 대해서 살펴보았다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 보조사상과 교학과의 관계를 고찰하였다. 이 둘 사이의 관계도 여러 분야에서 다룰 수 있겠지만 이 글에서는 교학 가운데 보조 지눌에게 가장 큰 영향을 미쳤다고 평가되는 화엄교학에 초점을 맞추어 이통 현과 지눌의 화엄과 의상/법장-징관으로 대표되는 이른바 주류 화엄의 관계에 대한 연구 경향을 회고하고 이에 대한 과제를 전망하였다. 지눌의 선교 관계에 대한 이통현의 영향을 논구하는 『보조사상󰡕의 논문 들을 정리하면 세 가지 방향을 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 지눌이 법장, 징관을 중심 으로 하는 주류 화엄교학-여기에는 묵시적으로 의상도 포함된다.-의 이론 적, 현학적 경향을 비판하고 이통현의 실천적 화엄성기설을 위주로 받아들 였다는 설이다.([의상/법장→징관] ≠ [이통현→지눌]) 둘째, 지눌이 법장, 징관의 이론적 화엄교학을 비판하고 이통현의 실천적 화엄을 받아들였 다는 점은 첫째 주장과 동일하지만 의상의 화엄성기설을 법장, 징관의 이론적 화엄교학과 분리시켜 이통현의 화엄설과 연계시킨 후 의상-이통현-지눌의 사상적 계보를 주장한다.([법장→징관] ≠ [의상→이통현→지눌]) 셋째, 지눌이 비판한 연기설 중심의 화엄설은 법장, 징관의 화엄이 아니라는 입장이다. 이 경우 지눌은 주류 화엄에 대해서 비판한 것이 아니라 아류의 당시 화엄을 비판한 것이 된다. 따라서 의상과 법장, 징관의 화엄이 하나로 묶여 이통현-지눌의 화엄설과 다시 연계될 가능성이 생겨난다.([당시 아류 화엄] ≠ [이통현→지눌] ≈? [의상/법장→징관]) 이러한 기존 연구를 바탕으로 필자는 앞으로의 과제로서 위에서 언급한[이통현→지눌]의 화엄과 [의상], [법장→징관]의 화엄의 관계에 대한 보다 철저한 규명과 함께 [이통현]과 [지눌]의 부분에 대한 연구 필요성을 제기하였다.

영문 초록

This paper recollects and prospects of the study on Bojo thought focusing on the relationship with the Buddhist doctrinal teachings among various research activities carried out by Bojo Thought Research Institution in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of its establishment. Although the relationship between the two can be dealt with in various fields, this article focuses on the Huayan thoughts, which is considered to have had the great influence on Bojo Jinul(普照知訥). Specifically, I evaluated the results of researches on the relationship between the Huayan thoughts of Litongxuan(李通玄) and Jinul and the so-called mainstream Huayan thoughts represented by Uisang, Fazang, and Chengguan and then raised the remaining tasks. There are three directions to summarize the articles of Bojo Thought which discuss the influence of Litongxuan on Jinul. The First is that Jinul criticized the theoretical and pedagogical tendency of the mainstream Huayan thoughts of Fazang and Chengguan - implicitly including Uisang here - and adopted thepractical Huayan of Litongxuan.([Uisang/Fazang→Chengguan] ≠ [Litongxuan→Jinual]) The Second is the same as the first claim that Jinul criticized Fazang and Chengguan and accepted Litongxuan. However, the second argument separated Uisang’s Huayan thoughts from those of Fazang and Chengguan and then linking Uisang’s Huayan with Litongxuan’s one, insists on the ideological lineage from Uisang to Litongxuan to Jinul.([Fazang→Chengguan] ≠ [Uisang→Litongxuan→Jinul]) The third argument is that Jinul s criticism is not about Fazang and Chengguan. In this case, Jinul was not criticizing the mainstream, but criticizing the epigone of Fazang and Chengguan at that time. Therefore, there is a possibility that [Uisnag/Fazang→Chengguan] Huayan will be tied together and reunited with [Litongxuan→Jinul] Huayan.([Epigone] ≠ [Litongxuan→Jinul] ≈? [Uisang/Fazang→Chengguan]) Based on these researches, I raised the necessity of clarification of the relationship between Huayan thoughts of ① [Litongxuan→Jinul] and ② [UIsang] and ③ [Fazang→ Chengguan] as future tasks.
