국문 초록

이 글은 <약무호남, 시무국가(若無湖南, 是無國家)>라는 문구에 내포되어 있는 이순신의 수군 전략을 규명하기 위한 것이다. 1592년 제1, 2차 출동의 작전 목표는 남해 연안에 출몰하는 일본 함대를 격파하여 북쪽으로 진격하는 일본군들의 후방을 위협함으로써 진격 속도를 늦추거나 남해연안으로 철수하도록 하기 위한 것이었다. 제3차 출동은 조선 수군에 위협을 느낀 일본의 전쟁 지휘부에서 작심을 하고 파견한 일본 정예수군과의 한판 승부였다. 제4 차 출동은 일본의 침략 본거지인 부산포를 공격하여 후방을 위협하고 퇴로를 차단하기 위한 것이었다. 1593년 2월, 3월, 4월에 걸쳐 실시한 제5차 출동과 5월, 6월, 7 월에 걸쳐 실시한 제6차 출동은 부산에서 일본으로 철수하려는 일본군의 퇴로를 막고, 격멸하기 위한 것이었다. 그런데 웅천의 적이 성을 쌓고 웅거하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 6월 중순 경부터는 800여척의 일본 함선들이 거제도의 송진포, 장문포 등지까지 진출하여 수륙으로 호남을 침범하려 하였다. 이제 일본의 후방을 공격하거나 퇴로를 차단하는 것이 문제가 아니라 수륙으로 호남을 침범하려는 일본군을 어떻게 저지할 것인지가 시급한 과제였다. 이렇게 해서 제기된 것이 현덕승에게 보낸 편지글에 나타난 <약무호남 시무국가> 이른바 <호남은 나라의 울타리입니다. 호남이 무너진다면 곧 바로 나라가 없어지는 것입니다>라는 이순신의 현실 인식이다. 경상도가 적에게 점령당한 상황에서 호남은 조선의 최후의 보루인 울타리 역할을 해야 한다는 것이다. 이 때문에 이순신은 1593년 7월 14일 진(陣)을 한산도로 옮긴다. 그리고 정유재란이 일어나기 전까지 견내량을 기점으로 일본수군의 서진을 차단하는‘남해해로차 단전략’을 구사하였다. 조선의 울타리인 호남을 보존하기 위한 것이었다. 이 때문에 조선은 정유재란이 일어나기 전까지 호남을 보존할 수 있었으며 결과적으로 군량과 병력이 조달되고, 조정의 명령체계 가 정상적으로 작동되어 전쟁을 수행할 수 있었던 것이다.

영문 초록

This essay is to investigate Admiral Yi Sun Sin s Naval strategy implicated in the phrase . The mission operation goal of the 1st and 2nd dispatch in 1592 was to slow the Japanese forces advance or to make them withdraw to the southern coast of Korea by defeating Japanese fleet appearing on the southern coast and pressuring the rear of the Japanese forces advancing North, The third dispatch was a showdown against the elite Japanese navy, which was dispatched by the Japanese war Command, threatened by the Chosun Navy. The fourth dispatch was to attack Busanpo, the stronghold of Japanese aggressors, making the rear of the Japanese forces vulnerable and cutting off their retreat. The 5th dispatch conducted over February, March, and April and the 6th dispatch conducted over May, June, and July of 1593, were aimed to block and eliminate the Japanese force s retreat. However, not only did the Japanese forces create its defensive on Wongcheon, but they were planning an amphibious operation on Geojaye-do, Songjinpo, and Jangmunpo with 800 ships, aimed to invade the Honam. The urgent task now was not to cut off the Japanese retreat, but to prevent the Japanese forces from landing its troops in Honam. It was in this moment that Admiral Yi brought up in his letter to Hyeonduksung, meaning . With Gyungsang-do fallen under the enemies hand, Honam must be the last stronghold of Chosuns defence. For this reason, Admiral Yi Sun Sin moved his military camp to Hansan-do on July 14, 1593. And until the moment before Jeongyujaeran, he used Intercepting Southern water ways strategy to block the Japanese Navy from advancing west. It was to preserve Honam, the last defence of Chosun. Thanks to such efforts, Chosun was able to preserve Honam until Jeongyujaeran. This not only resulted in the preservation of a safe supply and a military personal route, but also created a working chain of command for the orders to be passed down efficiently, thereby making the war time operations possible.
