국문 초록

오늘날 우리가 사용하는 ‘상상’은 ‘imagination’의 번안이며, 그 내용도 서양의 ‘imagination’의 의미로 사용하고 있다. 그러나 이 상상(想像, xiang iang)이란 용어는 동아시아에서 상상(想象, xiang xiang), 상상(想相, xiang xiang)이란 용어와 함께 오래전부터 사용되었다. 그것은 일상적인 생활이나 예술작품, 예술론에서 주로 기억의 재구성, 사물 본질의 연상이나 추측 과 같은 의미로 사용되었다. 이것은 서양에서 낭만주의 이전 철학의 인식론에서 기억과 관련되어 사용된 전통적인 개념에 가깝지만, 낭만주의 이후 허구적 상상력이나 창의적인 의미와는 거리가 멀다. 동아시아의 미학과 예술론에서 서양의 상상에 상응하는 중심개념은 ‘신사(神思, shen si)’이다. ‘신사’는 시간과 공간을 초월하여 무한히 전개되는 감성적 활동이다. 그것은 어떤 특정한 대상에 한정되지 않고 우주본체와 함께 무한히 변화하면서 전개된다. 이는 문학론에서 서예론, 산수화론으로 계승되어 발전되었다. 신사에는 두 가지 유형이 있다. 작가가 통제할 수 없는 힘에 의해 움직이는 신사(神思)와, 예술가 자신에 내재된 신(神)이 우주 본체인 신(神)과 일체화되어 주체적으로 자유롭게 활동하는 신사(神思)이다. 궁극적으로는 신사의 흐름은 후자에로 귀착된다. 이는 동아시아 예술의 본질인 천인합일과 연계되어 있기 때문이다. 서양의 상상이 서양의 철학적 본질과 관련되어 있듯이, 동아시아에서 신사는 동아시아 철학의 본질과 연계되어 있다. 그리고 신사는 서양의 상상의 개념을 포함하면서 더 확장된 것이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The term ‘想像(xiang xiang, 상상)’ is a translation of the English term ‘imagination’, and the meaning of the two terms is today regarded as the same. However, the term ‘xiang xiang’, along with ‘想象(xiang xiang, 상상)’ ‘想相(xiang xiang, 상상)’, has been used for a long time in East Asia even before the appropriate term to translate the term ‘imagination’ was to be chosen. ‘想像(xiang xiang)’ in East Asia has referred to a reconstruction of memories, or associations of and conjectures about the essence of things in everyday life, works of art, and art theories. While it is similar to the traditional concept of memory in epistemology before Romanticism, its meaning is very different from that of fictive imagination or of creation after Romanticism. It is the concept of ‘shen si(神思, 신사)’ that comes close to the connotation of imagination in English. ‘Shen si’ is an sensible activity that goes beyond the limits of time and space and is unfolded infinitely with the universe without being confined to a particular object. There are two types of ‘Shen si’ : (1) one moved by the power that cannot be controled by an artist, and (2) one moved by an artist being in harmony with the universe. The latter is more relevant. ‘Shen si’ in East Asia is associated with the essence of East Asia Philosophy, which involves the unity of universe and human. Also, ‘Shen si’, which also includes the concept of imagination, is a more extended term than the Western concept of imagination.
