청주시 도농 통합 과정 및 지명 선정에서 나타난 주민인식

국문 초록

본 연구는 청주시와 청원군의 지명 변천 및 도농 통합 과정을 분석하고, 통합 청주시 지명 선정 과정에서 나타난 주민인식을 살펴보았다. 주요 연구결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 먼저, 도농 통합 이전까지 청주는 국가수준에서 행정구역이 개편되고 지명 위계가 승격되거나 강등되는 변화를 피동적으로 경험해 왔다. 둘째, 1994년부터 20여 년 동안 4차례 시도되었던 청주·청원 도농 통합은 2014년 주민자율의 상향식 추진으로 성공하게 되었다. 마지막으로, 통합시 지명 선정에는 청주시민의 적극적인 참여가 이루어졌으며, 압도적인 지지로 ‘청주’가 선정되었다. 반면, 4개 구 지명 선정에서는 청원군민들의 적극적인 참여가 이루어졌으며 읍, 면 단위 중심의 소지역주의 갈등이 나타났다. 새로 선정된 시와 구 지명은 모두 역사적 상징성을 갖는 옛 지명들이다.

영문 초록

In this study, place name changes of Cheongju-Si (市)·Cheongwon-Gun (郡) and the process of the urban-rural consolidation of this region were analyzed, and the process of selection of the new place names of consolidated Cheongju-Si and residents’ perception were examined. Major study results are summarized as follows. First, before the urban-rural consolidation, Cheongju has passively experienced changes such as the reorganization of administrative districts and the elevation or degradation of the scales of place names at the national level. Second, The Cheongju-Cheongwon consolidation that had been attempted four times for 20 years from 1994 was successfully made in 2014 through the residents’ autonomous bottom-up promotion. Finally, Cheongju-si citizens actively participated in the selection of place name of the consolidated city and ‘Cheongju’ was determined with overwhelming support. However, the residents of Cheongwon-Gun actively participated in the selection of the place names of four gus (區) and conflicts occurred due to the regionalism of the residents of small regions such as Eup (邑)·Myeon (面). All the new place names originate from the old place names with historical symbolism.
