국문 초록

본고에서는 2012년 출범한 세종특별자치시를 사례로 지역역사지리를 구성하고자 하였다. 지역역사지리는 지역 관련 제반 언표적, 물질적 공간텍스트에 대한 역사지리적 접근을 통해 현재적 입장에서 지역의 역사적 변화과정 및 지역정체성 구성에 관심 갖는 공간과 시간이 통합된 지역연구의 한 방편이다. 이를 위해 특히 전통도시읍치에 주목하였는데, 읍치는 지역의 실제적·상징적 중심이자 교통의 결절지로서 지역의 전통적 모습 그리고 근대 이후 국토공간의 재편 과정에서 경험한 지역의 역사적 변화과정 등을 엿볼 수 있게 하는 의미 있는 실마리라고 할 수 있기 때문이다. 구체적으로 현 세종시 일대 행정구역의 역사적 변화, 조선시대 연기현과 전의현 읍치의 공간구성상 특징과 이들 읍치를 중심으로 한 전통적 교통체계 및 중심지 변화, 그리고 지역정체성 구성과 관련해 주목되는 역사문화적 의미체로서 읍치의 진산·주산 등에 대해 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

This paper tried to construct regional historical geography of Sejong City which was launched in 2012. Regional historical geography is an approach for regional studies that integrate space and time that are nterested in the process of regional historical change and the construction of regional identity through the historical geographical approach to the various spatial texts. With regard to the construction of regional historical geography I have paid special attention to ‘Eupchi’, the Korean traditional city. As a practical and symbolic center of region and a nodal point of traffic in the premodern society, ‘Eupchi’ could be a meaningful clue and a central indicator space at the same time that shows the traditional appearance of region and the process of historical change in the region. In terms of the purpose of this study, I examined concretely the historical changes of the administrative districts, the characteristics of the spatial composition of the Yeongi and Jeonui Eupchi in the Joseon Dynasty, the changes of traditional transportation system, and ‘Jinsan’ㆍ ’Jusan’ of Eupchi related to fengshui, the Korean raditional geography, for constructing the regional identity as a historical and cultural resource of the region.
