The seminar-system was the prime motor for the specialization and institutionalization of newly emerged sciences and scholarly activities in German universities of the 19th century. Through this system professors could convey their research interests into the teaching activities and the students could attain highly intensive training to be a specialist in their studying disciplines. For this reason it has been regarded as the realized form of “unity of research and teaching” that the idealist-neohumanistic university reformers propagated. For a long time its establishment in the German modern universities was generally connected to the reform movements of neohumanistic university thinkers, i. e. Fichte, Schleichermacher and Wilhelm von Humboldt. Also the reformed Prussian universities, especially the university of Berlin were supposed to have played a leading role in the building of seminar-system and the institutionalization of various scholarly activities. The philological seminar of the Berlin university constitutes one of the good examples to show the process of seminar building and its function as an organization of research and teaching. It was inspite of its some innovative characters not the first and the foremost, needless to say its leading role for the other German universities of the 19th century. The seminar-system itself had a long prehistory dated back to the disputatio of medieval universities. In line with their development, especially of the philosophical faculty since the Renaissance the first seminar, the philological seminar, was established in 1737 at the reform university of the 18th century, university of Gottingen. In many points the university reform of Prussia did not make a breakthrough from the traditional German universities but a continuous form of the model universities of the 18th century, i. e. Halle and Gottingen, with some improvements. The philological seminar of Berlin followed the model of Gottingen as a whole and structurally more improved. It functioned not only as the training body of secondary school teachers, but also as a peculiar form of the specialized research and the training of the prospective specialist-scholars.
