영문 초록

The early stages of the decipherment of the Egyptian hieroglyphs, in the period from 1814-21, have been controversial for almost two centuries. How much of the credit belongs to Thomas Young, and how much to Jean-François Champollion? There is no straightforward answer, but it is widely accepted that Young made a greater contribution to the decipherment than Champollion, after his public success in 1822, was willing to admit. This paper explores the differing attitudes of Young and Champollion towards the same problem of decipherment.
