Seung-Jik Park’s store under he slogan of credit first set out in a smoothly, dealt with Korean produced dry-goods. Doosan group starting from Park Seung-Jik store re-organized to a joint-stock corporation in 1925, made a plan to develop as a trading company by expanding its commercial activity.
Then Doosan group grew focusing on OB Beer as a key company, and in 1999 attempted a marked change to Doosan Heavy Industry breaking away from light industry and undertaking Korean Heavy Industry, Doosan has made progress based on thorough quality control and customer satisfaction management policy.
In terms of total capital stock of Doosan group from the end of Korean Imperialism till 2000, it ranked 17th place in 1926, 14th in 1935, and 11th belonging to top 30 large companies at the end of 2000. But in the meantime, Doosan has concentrated on consumable rather than producible, import than export as it maintained dealer’s management. Looking at the ratio of export and import in the 19905, it was 50.5% to 49.5%, showing the company has conducted business activity mainly through import.
In response to the government’s export drive in the 1960s, it entered the 20th place In 1979. won the gold industry medal with 180 million dollar export results, and recorded the 14th in 1980, and fell to the 24th in 2001. so it needs export driven management strategy.
The entrepreneurship of Doosan handed down to from Seung-Jik Park’s store is,
① pragmatism,
② frontier spirit,
③ familial culture,
④ unity between members,
which are thought to be a motive power to sustain Doosan group for 100 years. The core of Doosan spirit as today’s strong and sound firm is customers and able men and quality and Innovation. In other words, it can be summed up to satisfaction of customers, fostering of able members, quality enhancement and management innovation in line with customers’ needs and desires.
The reason why Doosan founded at the end of Korean imperialism has maintained itself as one of the best firms is that it overcome crises with “advanced insights and bold resoluteness”, and kept its family precepts “be faithful to enterprise without getting involved m politics”.
However, our economy should fight it out with export competitiveness in the world economy, for doing so, we should grow and develop as a strong firm, In this tendency, the firm should be able to reorganize its business structure to integrate related businesses and maximize synergy effect, and maximize corporate value. The transformation from OB Beer to Doosan Heavy Industry can be said to a management strategy to see new 100 years ahead.
Thus Doosan Group growing along with the development of Korean firms after the Political Reform in 1894 should be the best in korea to go forward future.
