하므？？의 번역자 설정식과 연희전문 문과의 영어영문학 교육

국문 초록

이 논문은 영문학자이자 번역가로서 설정식의 아비투스 형성에 그의 모교인 연희전문 문과가 기여했으리라고 추정되는 지점들을 탐구한 다. 한국전쟁 발발 직전에 설정식이 번역 출간한 하므？？은 셰익스피어의 햄릿을 원문에서 직접 우리말로 옮긴 최초의 완역본이라는 문학 사적 의의를 갖는다. 뿐만 아니라 이 번역 작품은 동과 서, 한자어와 순수한 우리말을 적절히 배합하려는 흥미로운 시도를 담고 있는 바, 이는 연희전문(조선기독대학)의 교육 내용 및 방침과 무관하지 않다고, 즉, 그가 연희전문에서 받은 영어영문학 및 교양교육의 결실이라고 추론할 여지들이 적지 않다. 설정식이 다닌 연희전문은 초교파적 기독교 개신교 정신에 덧붙여 일제 감정기에 조선어(한국어) 어문학 교육을 보호 하고 장려하므로 설정식을 비롯한 조선인 청년 들에게 언어·문화적 대안공간을 마련해주었다. 좌익계열 문인으로 활동한 설정식의 시에서 자주 발견되는 ‘예언자적 목소리’와 성서 인용, 또한 한국전쟁 북측 통역관으로 활동한 후 숙청당한 그의 비극적인 행적은 기존 연구에서 집중적 으로 다뤄진 반면, 그의 번역가 및 영문학자로서의 면모와 연희전문 교육이 그에게 미쳤으리라고 생각되는 측면들은 지엽적으로만 다뤄진 경향이 있었다. 본 연구는 한편으로는 연희전문의 영어영문학 교육의 구체적인 내용을 재구성하고 다른 한편 영문학자이자 번역가로서 설정식의 성취의 일각을 조명하므로 설정식에 대한 논의에서 배제되어온 측면들을 보완하여 서양문 학의 ‘한국적 수용’의 한 전범으로서 그를 새롭 게 인식할 가능성을 제안한다.

영문 초록

This paper investigates and reconstructs the influence on Sŏl Chŏngsik as a student and translator of English literature considering the college education he received in Korea. His Hamŭlet, published only one year before the Korean War, was the first complete translation of the iconic classic into Korean directly from the English original. It demonstrates an interesting conjuncture of the west and the east, of the Sino-Korean and vernacular Korean, which bears the marks of the curriculum and pedagogy of his alma mater, Chosen Christian College (Yonhui College), where effective training in English skills was combined with a literary education on Western and Eastern classics. Moreover, in the ambiance of ecumenical Protestantism, Sŏl Chŏngsik s undergraduate college fostered Korean studies, setting up an enclave of linguistic and cultural freedom within the tightly regimented Japanese colonial regime. The grafting of Leftist politics on the prophetic tone of his poetry enriched with allusions to the Bible, and his involvement in the Armistices Talks as the main interpreter for the Communist side, have puzzled and fascinated scholars of modern Korean literature. Although a passing reference to what he seems to have acquired at Yonhui College is not entirely missing in the discussions by the critics of Sŏl s creative writing, the exceptional role which Sŏl s undergraduate school had played in the formation of his habitus deserves closer scrutiny. Similarly, his contributions as a translator of English and American literature tend to be relegated to footnotes (if remembered at all) in Korean literary studies. However, Hamŭlet by this hapless writer and translator, who quite exceptionally in colonial Korea had studied English literature in the United States, stands as an impressive historical model of transforming English literature into an abiding asset for Korean literary culture.
