국문 초록

우리 사회의 높은 자살률에도 불구하고, 아직까지 자살을 예방가능한 문제로 받아들이는 사회적 인식이 조성되지 않고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 집단주의라는 우리나라 문화적 특징을 바탕으로, 자살을 둘러싼 인식과 태도를 탐색하였다. 구체적으로, 부정적 감정 수용과 자살 인식과의 관련성을 검증하기 위해, 성인 남녀 387명을 대상으로, 온라인 설문조사를 실시하였다. 본 연구 결과에 따르면, 힘들고 어려움을 이겨냄으로써 개인이 더욱 성장한다는 부정적 감정 수용은 자살에 대한 책임 및 예방행동에 대한 잘못된 인식은 물론, 자살행위에 대한 부정적인 평가와 유의미한 관계가 있음이 확인되었다. 반면, 자살에 대한 지식이 높을수록, 자살에 대한 원인을 개인의 나약함 때문이라고 인식하는 경향이 낮아졌으며, 자살위기 극복을 위해 전문가의 도움을 청하는 것에 긍정적인 태도를 나타내었다. 자살 리터러시는 부정적 감정 수용과 자살에 대한 인식과의 관계를 조절하는 효과를 보여주었다.

영문 초록

Despite the high suicide rates in Korea, the notion of viewing suicide as a preventable public health issue is not widely accepted. Focusing on cultural factors surrounding suicide related cognition, this study examined Koreans’ attitudes toward mental health programs for suicide prevention. In particular, based on collectivism, we investigated the relationship between the acceptance of negative emotions and suicide related cognition. Based on an online survey of 387 adults, we found that the belief that overcoming negative emotions leads to self-improvement was significantly associated with attributions on causes and treatment concerning suicide and suicidal thoughts. Such belief was also related to negative attitudes toward suicidal people. However, those with high levels of suicide knowledge were less likely to blame individuals for causes of suicide, showing more positive attitudes toward use of mental health programs for suicide prevention. That is, suicide literacy moderated the relationship between acceptance of negative emotions and suicide related cognition.
