본 대우조선해양의 경영의 특성은 무엇인가? 이 사례연구는 크게 세부분으로 나눌 수 있다. 첫째, 대우조선해양의 성장사의 특성이다. 둘째, 대우조선해양에 영향을 미치는 최근의 급격한 국제환경의 변화를 분석한다. 셋째, 대우조선해양의 성공으로 인해 다른 기업도 대우조선해양식 경영을 하려고 한다. 대우조선해양식 경영시스템의 이점과 한계는 무엇인가? 1973년 창업한 대우조선해양은 활기차고 진취적인 기업문화 창달에 힘쓰면서, 2008년부터 회사가 지향해야 할 핵심역량을 신뢰와 열정으로 정하고 미래 해양한국의 개척자이자 세계 조선시장의 초일류기업으로 남기 위해 새로운 전략을 수립하고 있다. 그것은 곧 회사 구성원, 고객, 주주, 그리고 국민 모두에게 믿음을 줄 수 있는 투명경영, 이익창출 극대화의 의지이며, 창조와 혁신으로 무한경쟁의 국제무대에서 절대 우위를 확보해 사회와 국가에 공헌하는 초우량기업으로 거듭나기 위한 대우조선해양의 비전이다. 대우조선해양은 세계 최첨단의 IT기술을 기반으로 체계화된 선박 건조 시스템과 고기술, 고난도 해양플랫폼 건조능력, 대형 플랜트 프로젝트 관리능력, VLCC, LNG선, 드릴쉽을 건조하는 고도의 기술력을 고루 갖추고, 모든 종류의 해양 및 플랜트 제품을 최첨단 기술로 생산하고 있다. 이런 대우조선해양의 기반을 이루는 것은 10년 이상의 경력을 가진 1,500여 명의 설계·연구요원들과 26,000여 명의 숙련된 기술자들이 가진 기술력이다. 2008년의 글로벌금융위기에서 완전히 벗어난 대우조선해양은 이제 F1 프로젝트(First, Fast, Formula)로 21세기 초일류 조선·해양기업, 나아가 인류사회에 기여하는 지속가능 기업으로 도약하기 위해 모든 임직원이 한 방향으로 창조와 혁신전략을 수립하고 있다. 미래의 기업여건이 불확실할수록 CEO의 리더십의 필요성은 더 높아진다. 이러한 불확실성의 시대에서 모든 근로자들은 CEO가 최근의 무질서한 세계경제상황으로부터 그들을 이끌어줄 것을 기대할 것이다. 이는 오랫동안 의존했던 ‘하의상달’의 합의모색형태의 의사결정과는 다른 새로운 패러다임의 의사결정을 요구한다.

영문 초록

What are the characteristics of DSME Management? The case study will be divided into three major parts. First, I should like to explain the characteristics of the so-called DSME style of management. Second, I will explore recent and drastic change in environment of shipping industry. Third, because of the past success of DSME business, many companies are eager to apply DSME management style to their own operations. What are the advantages and limitations of the adoption of the DSME management system? Ever since its birth as an frontier corporation in the 1973 it initiated its pledge not only to become the leader in the developing Korean shipping industry but also to become the pioneer in the global shipbuilding market by declaring ‘trust’ and ‘passion’ as the company’s core values. The values were chosen to establish an honest and profitable corporation that is trustworthy to its employees, clients, stock holders and fellow countrymen. Moreover, everyone at DSME shares a vision that relentless pursuit of creation and innovation are what it take to achieve superiority in the today’s rapidly changing market. DSME had been producing the highest quality product based on its IT technology. Its systemized construction capacity, VLCC, LNG Vessel, drillship, high level offshore platform manufacturing ability, state of the art large scale plant project management capability, and surface vessel production technology are some of DSME’s specialties. Behind the company’s superior production capability stand expert team of 1,500 designers and researchers as well as 10,000 production engineers who had almost 20 years of experience. DSME’s triumphant emergence from global financial crisis enabled it to gain confidence to meet the year 2008 with the determination and drive to become a corporation that optimizes ‘F1 strategy’(First, Fast, formula). Finally, the DSME is putting their best efforts in realizing the goal of making DSME the world leader in the global shipping industry. The more uncertain the future business conditions, the stronger the need for CEO’ leadership. In this age of uncertainty, all employees increasingly will look to CEO to lead then out of recent chaotic world business situation and for future development. This requires a new paradigm of decision making on which DSME management has long relied.
