唐代 신라와 고구려인의 越境, 그리고 소설 속 그들의 형상

국문 초록

본 논문은 《태평광기》의 고사들을 중심으로 신라와 고구려를 비롯한 한반도인과 그 나라들이 어떻게 인식되고 있는지를 살펴보고 있다. 이는 한국인 자신의 기록이 아닌 중국인이 일종의 외국인으로서 한반도 사람들을 어떻게 인식했는지에 대한 고찰이다. 당대 전반에 걸쳐 중국의 동쪽으로는 주로 신라와 일본의 사신, 승려 그리고 그들을 수행하는 이들이 공식적으로 중국 땅을 오가곤 했다. 고구려인의 경우는 중국에 인접한 국가의 이주민으로서 자연스레 중국에 흘러들어오기도 하고, 패전국의 유민으로서 중국 땅에 강제로 이주되기도 했다. 이러한 사람들의 모습이 《태평광기》의 고사들 속에 다양하게 반영되어 있는 것이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 이들의 형상을 신라와 고구려로 나누어 살펴보았다. 신라의 경우 이 형상은 ‘중개자(매개자)로서의 신라와 신라인’, ‘신비로운 인물로서의 신라인’, ‘서화(書畵)를 즐기는 나라로서의 신라’, ‘진귀한 물건의 산지로서의 신라’, ‘부정적 이미지의 신라인’이라는 다섯 가지로 나누었다. 그리고 고구려의 경우는 먼저 ‘고구려 유민과 그들에 대한 인식’을 살펴보고, 다음으로는 신라의 고사와 동일한 설정이면서도 그들에 대한 인식에서는 차이를 보이는 작품에 대해 분석할 것이다. 이러한 분석들 하나하나는 어떤 역사적 사실이나 사건의 명확한 근거를 제시한다는 의미보다는 당시 한국인에 대한 인식의 경향성을 살펴보기 위함이다.

영문 초록

This paper examines how Silla and Koguryo of ancient Korea and their people are perceived by China through the analysis about the stories of Taiping Guangji太平廣記. This is an examination of how the Chinese perceived the Korean people as a foreigner in the past. Throughout the period of the Tang Dynasty, Silla and Japan’s diplomatic delegation, monks, and those who accompanied with them officially traveled to China. In the case of the Koguryo people, it was natural that they migrated to China as an emigrant of the neighboring country, and they were often forced to migrate to the Chinese land as a refugee in the defeated country. These figures are variously reflected in the stories of Taiping Guangji. In the case of Silla, these figures can be separated into ‘Silla as a mediator’, ‘People of Silla as a mysterious figure’, ‘Silla as a country enjoying books and pictures’ and ‘Silla as a producing place of rare objects’. In the case of Koguryo, we first examine ‘The refugee of Koguryo and the perception of them’, and then analyze the works that have the same setting of the Silla story but differ in the perception of them. Each of these analyses is intended to examine the tendency of perceptions of Koreans at the time rather than to suggest the conclusive evidences of any historical facts or events.
