老舍의 단편소설 《断魂枪》과 희곡 《五虎断魂枪》 비교 연구

국문 초록

老舍가 1935년에 발표한 단편소설 《断魂枪》은 그의 단편소설 중에서 대표작으로 손꼽히는 작품이다. 《断魂枪》은 老舍가 본래 장편으로 계획했던 《二拳师》의 내용 중에서 선택한 장면으로, 5천 자에 불과한 짧은 단편임에도 높은 완성도를 가지고 있다. 老舍 본인도 이 작품에 대해서는 큰 애착을 가지고 있어, 1946년에 학술계 교류를 위해 미국으로 가서 생활하던 도중 그는 이 소설을 5막짜리 희곡인 《五虎断魂枪》으로 재창작하였다. 두 작품은 제목과 소재, 배경, 인물 및 사건 등 여러 부분에서 연관성을 발견할 수 있다. 그 중에서도 가장 중요한 요소는 “세 명의 인물과 하나의 사건”으로 대표되는 내용으로, 소설에서 중심 사건으로 서술된 이 내용이 희곡에서도 유사한 모습으로 등장하고 있다. 하나의 텍스트를 개작한 것이니만큼 두 작품은 여러 공통점을 가지고 있으나, 주제의식에서 다소의 차이를 보이고 있다. 소설에서는 인물의 언행과 심리에 대한 묘사를 통해 변화하는 시대 속에서의 비애와 애상이라는 주제를 표현했으나, 희곡에서는 소설과는 다른 주제의식을 드러내고 있다. 본고에서는 두 작품 사이의 연관성을 상세히 분석하고, 소설에서 희곡으로 개작되는 과정에서 작품의 주제가 어떻게 변화하고 발전하였는지를 고찰하고자 한다.

영문 초록

The Death Dealing Spear, released in 1935, is undoubtedly one of the best short novels of Lao She. The work consists of the selected scenes from Two Kung-Fu Masters, which Lao She originally planned to make as a full-length novel. The story’s quality is very high in spite of the short length of only 5,000 characters. Lao She himself also had a deep affection to it, as he remade it into a five-act drama The Spear That Demolishes Five Tigers at Once, while he was staying in the U.S. for academic exchanges in 1946. Many similarities can be found from the two pieces including the title, subject, background, characters and events. The most important factor among them is “the three characters and one event” plot, which is described as a main event in the novel and also appears in a similar format in the drama. As both works are remade from the same text, they have many things in common, while there is some extent of difference in the main theme. The novel expresses the sorrow and grief in the era of change by describing the character’s mind, words and deeds. However the drama has different themes and intentions with the novel. In this paper, I will analyze the relation between the two in detail and study how the subject changes and develops when the novel is remade into the drama.
