사회적 관심과 연대를 추구하는 인성교육의 모색

국문 초록

인성교육의 필요성은 특히 2015년 초 인성교육진흥법 시행 이후부터 더욱 강조되고 있는 것 같다. 대학들의 경우, 최근 2016년 8월에 한국의 12개 가톨릭계 대학들이 함께 개최한 ‘프란치스코 봉사캠프’는 하나의 좋은 사례라고 생각된다. 이러한 추세와 맥락에서 본 연구는 특히 가톨릭계 대학들에게 몇 가지를 강조하고자 하였는바, 첫째, 가톨릭계 대학들이 추구하는 인성교육의 정체성과 차별성은 ‘기업 맞춤형 인재’ 보다는 ‘빛과 소금’이 되는 인재 양성을 지향한다는 점에서 찾아야 하고 그게 바로 가톨릭계 대학들의 존재 이유라는 점, 그리고, 둘째, 봉사 캠프는 ‘자선’에 토대를 둔 ‘자원봉사’가 아니라, 사회정의와 연대의식에 토대를 둔 ‘봉사학습’을 지향해야 한다는 점이 그것이다. 그리고 본 연구는 해결의 열쇠가 바로 ‘가톨릭 사회론(사회 교리)’이며, 가톨릭 사회론은 세상에 대한 ‘사회적 관심과 연대의식’을 불러 일으켜 ‘세상의 빛과 소금’이 되기 위한 성찰과 투신을 가능케 하기에, 인성교육의 토대와 원천으로서 타당하다고 주장했다. 아울러, 인성교육적 유용성 내지 효과가 있음을 필자가 학부와 대학원에서 실제로 가르치는 「가톨릭교회와 사회참여」와 「가톨릭 사회론과 인성교육」 과목의 수강 소감문을 통하여 입증하였다. 가톨릭 사회론은 가톨릭계 대학들의 현행 인성교육과 자원봉사 활동에 다양한 이유에서 변화와 영감을 줄 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Even though the necessity of character education has been mentioned in our society so far, it seems to be emphasized more than ever, especially after the Character Education Promotion Law came into effect in early 2015. In the case of universities, the ‘Francisco Service Camp’, held by a group of 12 Catholic universities in Korea in August 2016, seems to be a good example. In this trend and context, the present study made the following points, especially to Catholic universities in Korea: First, the identity and distinctiveness of the character education pursued by Catholic universities should be found in that the universities aim to bring up students to the ‘light and salt’ of the world, rather than to the human resources fit for a company, and that is what Catholic universities are for. Second, the sharing pursued in the Service Camp should aim at ‘service learning’ based on social justice and solidarity, rather than merely pursuing voluntary service activities based on charity. It is because to be the ‘light and salt’ of the world means commitment and action to engage the world. The present study, then, argued that the Catholic social teaching is the key to those problems, because the social teaching inspires students to social concern and solidarity needed to serve as the ‘light and salt’ of the world, and because it invites them to reflect on themselves and to think seriously about commitment to social justice and solidarity, possibly for the first time in their lives. In addition, the social teaching proved valid and useful as a base and a source for character education. It was shown in the responses of the students in the undergraduate course taught by the author every year, titled “The Catholic Church and Social Participation,” and in the graduate course also taught by the author every year, titled “The Catholic Social Teaching and the Character Education’. To conclude, the Catholic social teaching can make a difference to the current character education and voluntary service of Catholic universities, and it also can inspire them for various reasons.
