사회적 네트워크(Social Network) 조직연구의 동향

국문 초록

본 논문은 조직연구(organization studies) 분야를 중심으로 사회적 네트워크(social net-works) 연구의 주요 내용을 개관하고, 최근 연구동향을 이론적, 방법론적, 경험적 문제로 나누어 소개한다. 사회적 네트워크는 관계론적(relational perspectives) 관점에서 조직의 내부/외부를 조망하는 연구흐름에 위치하면서 일반적, 추상적 조직환경의 개념을 조직 간 관계(interorganizational relationships)로 구체화시키는데 기여했다. 본 논문은 조직연구 분야 중에서 사회적 네트워크 관련 대표적 이론화의 사례로서 약한 유대(weak ties), 구조적 공백(structural holes), 지위/정체성(identity/status) 개념을 소개하고, 이와 함께 진행된 네트워크 형성과 동학(dynamics)에 대한 그 간의 논의를 살펴본다. 그리고, 최근 연구동향을 이론적, 방법론적, 경험적 이슈로 나누어서 몇 가지 주제를 선택적으로 고찰해본다. 이론적 동향에서는 네트워크 복수성(pluralism), 구조(structure), 상황 의존성(contingencies), 네트워크의 부정적 효과 등의 문제를 살펴보고, 방법론적 동향 에서는 네트워크의 상호의존성(interdependence), 내생성(endogeneity) 및 시뮬레이션 방법을 다루고, 경험적 연구 분야에서는 협력과 경쟁, 기술혁신, 네트워크 전파 및 신흥 시장(emerging economoies)의 연구를 살펴본다. 마지막으로 사회적 네트워크 연구가 조직연구 분야에 주는 함의에 대해 탐색해본다. 사회적 네트워크 연구는 앞으로도 조직 및 사회에 관한 이론적 명제들의 작동 메커니즘을 관계론적 관점에서 정교화시킴으로써 ‘조직(organization)’보다는 ‘조직화(organizing)’의 프로세스에 대한 구체적인 과정을 기술-설명하는데 도움을 줄 것이다. 그동안 사회과학의 해묵은 주제인 미시-거시 연계가 주로 철학적, 이론적으로 논의되었다면, 사회적 네트워크 접근은 이러한 이론적 논의를 경험적, 실증적 수준으로 탐구할 수 있는 사고의 틀과 방법론을 제공하며, 이를 통해 중범위 수준의 메커니즘에 대한 조직이론을 개발하는데 도움을 줄 것으로 본다. 앞으로도 사회이론과 조직이론적 논의에 대한 치열한 고민을 통하여 사회적 네트워크 연구가 조직연구의 혁신적 발전에 창의성을 불어넣기를 기대해본다.

영문 초록

Social network research helped organization studies to advance empirical exami-nation of organizational environments by identifying intra- and inter-organiza-tional interactions with its relational, empirical concepts and tools. This paper presents the overview of social network research in the areas of organization studies including its brief intellectual history, overarching agenda, and empirical phenomena of study. Then, it introduces influential theorizing about the process and consequences of social networks by selecting the following: Mark Granovetter’s “strength of weak ties,” Ronald Burt’s “structural holes,” Joel Podonly’s status signal in market competition, and Ezra Zuckerman’s identity in candidate-audience model. It also summarizes recent, emerging research on the process of social networks, including their formation and evolution. Then, it presents recent research trends of social network research in the theoretical arena (multiplexity and pluralism, structure, contingencies, and negative effects), methodological issues (interdependence, endogeneity, and simulation analysis), and empirical areas (cooperation and competition, techno-logical innovation, and emerging markets). Lastly, the paper discusses the implications of social network research in advancing the process view of organizing and helping to address the micro-macro linkages in organization studies. Social network research can advance our understanding about organiz-ing process by revealing relational mechanisms that operate with social actors interacting with organizational environments. It may also help to escape from highly theoretical discussions of social theory by empirically examining concrete mechanisms of micro-macro linkages.
