피에르 발데스와 ‘리옹의 가난한 자들’에게서 배우는 교회개혁

국문 초록

본고의 목표는 루터 종교개혁의 선구자 가운데 한 사람인 피에르 발데스(Pierre Valdès, 1140-c.1217)와 그와 함께 한 ‘리옹의 가난한 자들’의 역사를 연구하여 오늘날 개혁이 절실히 요청되는 한국교회의 개혁운동을 위해 필요한 역사적 통찰력을 얻는 것이다. 발데스는 리옹에서 성공한 부자 상인이었다가 모든 것을 팔아 가난한 사람들에게 주고 자발적 가난의 삶을 살며 순회 복음 전도자로 변신한 인물이다. 그의 삶의 변화의 출발점은 “가서 네가 가진 것을 모두 팔아 가난한 자들에게 나눠 주어라… 그리고 와서 나를 따르라”는 말씀을 듣고 그대로 실천한 것이다. 극적으로 변화된 발데스의 삶을 구성하는 세가지 요소, 즉 성서, 가난, 복음 설교는 발데스와 그와 함께 한 ‘리옹의 가난한 자들’의 개혁운동의 특징을 보여준다. 경제가 급속도로 발전해가던 12세기 사회경제적 상황에서 증대되는 빈부격차와 부유한 교회에 저항하여 그리스도와 사도들의 자발적 가난의 삶을 본받고 실천하고자 했던 발데스와 ‘리옹의 가난한 자들’의 삶은 맘몬주의와 세속화의 늪에 빠져 복음과 교회의 본질을 상실하여 맛을 잃은 소금이 되어 가는 한국교회에 큰 도전을 던져준다. 더 나아가 이들이 추구한 자발적 가난은 한국교회가 빠져 있는 물신숭배와 번영주의 신학에서 벗어나 다시 십자가의 신학과 신음하는 지구의 생명을 살리는 생태신학으로 개혁해 나가는 길에 중요한 이정표를 보여준다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the history of Pierre Valdès and ‘the Poors of Lyons’ to acquire insight for the reformation of the Korean Church. Valdès is a person who transformed his life dramatically from a wealthy merchant of Lyons to a poor itinerant preacher after selling his possessions and giving everything to the poor. The starting point of this change was his listening to the word that Jesus addressed to a rich young man: “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, [...] Then come, follow me.” Three elements that compose the dramatically-changed life of Valdès, i.e., are the Bible, the poverty, and preaching, and they show the features of the reformation movement of ‘the poor of Lyons.’ In the socio-economic situation of the 12th century where the economy developed rapidly, Valdès and the poor of Lyons led a life of voluntary poverty according to the life of Christ and the Apostles, against the wealthy church and the increasing economic gap between the rich and the poor. This life of voluntary poverty gives a great challenge to the secularized Korean Church that is in the risk of losing the essence of the gospel and the church. Furthermore, the voluntary poverty that they pursued illustrates an important milestone on the way to the reformation of the Korean Church from materialism and Prosperity Theology to Earth s life-saving ecological theology and the theology of the cross.
