국문 초록

토마스 아 켐피스에 의해 절정을 이루었고 종교 개혁자들에게 영향을 준 ‘오늘의 헌신’ 운동이 실천 경건과 성서에 의거한 생활을 강조하며 수도사들의 삶의 개혁에 집중했다. 그리스도인의 삶의 본질과 양상을 깊이 있게 이해하고 실천하기 위한 운동이었다. 즉, 토마스 아 켐피스에 의해 정점에 달했던 ‘오늘의 헌신’ 운동이 그리스도인의 삶의 본질과 핵심이 보이지 않을 정도로 변질되어 있던 중세 초기에 진정한 교회의 이상을 재현하여 실천하고자 했던 움직이었다. 바로 겸허한 그리스도를 본받고 따르는 것이 목적이었다. ‘오늘의 헌신’ 운동을 실천하기 시작했던 헤르트 흐로테가 종교개혁의 선구자였고, 그의 영향을 받았던 토마스 아 켐피스 역시 종교개혁의 선구자였다. 헤르트 흐로테가 특히 당시의 수도원 제도와 성물숭배, 성자숭배 등을 비판했고, 신비주의를 배제하며 평신도 중심의 운동을 일으켰으며, 토마스 아 켐피스의 저서 『그리스도를 본받아』가 성서와 그리스도 중심의 사상을 바탕으로 하고 있다는 점을 볼 때 이들이 충분히 종교개혁의 선구자들이었음을 알 수 있다. ‘오늘의 헌신’ 운동에 있어서 주요 작품이었던 『그리스도를 본받아』가 중세 후기 경건을 위해 큰 가치를 지녔던 것도 의심할 여지가 없다. 그리고 수많은 사본들과 번역본들이 존재하는 것으로 미루어볼 때, 토마스아 켐피스의 영향력이 거의 다 그의 저서 『그리스도를 본받아』에 의해 생겨난 것으로 볼 수 있다. ‘오늘의 헌신’ 운동을 위해 안내서 역할을 했던 그 문서가 근대 가톨릭교회에서는 특별히 로욜라의 이그나티우스에 의해 그리스도를 따르는 것에 대한 이해와 흥미를 일깨웠다. 개신교에서는 제4권(성찬에 관한 고찰 및 권면들과 기도문들)을 제외한 나머지 부분이 높이 평가되며 경건주의 시대에도 읽으면 좋을 책으로 추천되었다. 이 문서가 지금까지도 끊임없이 여러 형태로 경건 서적들을 위해 대표적인 바탕이 되고 있다.

영문 초록

The movement ‘Devotio Moderna’ that responded to a decision made by Thomas a Kempis(1380-1471) and that influenced the Reformers emphasized the practice of piety based on the Scripture and concentrated on the reform of the monastic life. It was a movement that had a deep understanding of the character and shape of Christ s life and that aimed at practicing it. In the Middle Ages in which the character and center of the life of Christ was degenerated, the movement ‘Devotio Moderna’ that reached its peak with Thomas a Kempis, gave a new actualization and strife for a true church. It aimed at experiencing Christ, and taking him as a role model, and follow him. Geert Groote who started the practice of ‘Devotio Moderna’ was a Pre-Reformer, and Thomas a Kempis, who was influenced by him, also is a fore-runner of the Reformation. When we look at the fact that Geert Groote criticised the system of monasteries, the veneration of relics and saints, etc., abolished Mysticism, and initiated the laity-centered movement, and that Thomas a Kempis ‘Imitatio Christi’ is based on the center of the Scripture and Christ’s life, we can easily realize that both of them were Pre-Reformers. There is no reason to doubt the enormous value The Imitation of Christ, that was the main work of the ‘Devotio Moderna,’ had for the spirituality in the second half of the Middle Ages. And when we look at its various editions and translations, we can see that almost all of Thomas a Kempis’ influence was due to his book The Imitation of Christ. This piece of writing played a guiding role for the movement of the ‘Devotio Moderna’ and awoke interest in the modern Catholic Church and especially in Ignatius of Loyola in following Christ. Apart from the fourth book (On the Blessed Sacrament), all other parts were highly appreciated in Protestantism and in the age of Pietism was recommended for reading. Even until today, this book still is the fundamental for various writings on spirituality.
