예비유아교사의 문화이해 프로젝트 이야기

국문 초록

오늘날 다문화사회로의 변화는 유아교사들이 문화적 민감성과 유능성을 갖출 것을 요구하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 예비유아교사들이 국제연계를 활용한 문화이해 프로젝트를 어떻게 경험하는지, 그리고 그 과정에서 다문화교육에 대하여 어떠한 관점의 변화를 보이는지를 조명하고자 하였다. 28 명의 예비유아교사를 대상으로 프로젝트 접근법을 활용하여 한 문화의 세부적 관심사를 한 달 동안 탐구하도록 하였다. 다문화효능감척도로 이들의 다문화 경험, 태도, 효능감과 관점을 살펴보았으며 발표자료, 토의자료, 학습자 저널 등을 수집하고 관찰하였다. 분석 결과, 문화이해 프로젝트의 성공을 위해서는 예비유아교사들이 가지는 호기심이 중요할 뿐만 아니라 경험을 통해 관심사가 확대될수 있으며 무엇보다 생생하고 직접적인 경험을 전해줄 수 있는 인적 자원의 풍부함이 결정적임을 확인할 수 있었다. 문화이해 프로젝트를 통해 예비교사들의 단순한 문화 인내 관점은 감소한 반면 권익주창 관점은 증가하였다. 참여 예비교사들의 목소리는 의미 있는 다문화교육의 방안으로 프로 젝트의 가능성을 찾으면서 교사 자신의 편견을 해체하고 새로운 의미를 구성해갈 것을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

The current shift to the multicultural society requires early childhood teachers to be culturally responsive and competent. This study aimed at illuminating how early childhood preservice teachers experience a culture-study project with global connection opportunities, and how their perspectives on multicultural education may change through their increasing cultural understanding. A total of 28 preservice teachers agreed to participate in this study and studied specific aspects of a culture for a month. Their cultural experience, attitude, and efficacy as well as conceptualizations of multiculturalism were measured by the Multicultural Efficacy Scale, and their discussion minutes, presentation files and written reports, along with reflective journals were collected. The results found that the participants’ intial curiosity would matter but the scope of participant’s interests could be expanded through experiences, and rich human resources delivering vivid stories and in-depth expertise would be the very key to the successful culture-study projects. Through the project, the tolerance conceptualization of multiculturalism decreased while advocacy perspective increased. The voices of the participating preservice teachers suggest the potentials of projects as a meaningful multicultural education strategy, and the importance of perceiving their own cultural biases and prejudices and then making new meanings of multicultural education.
