국문 초록

이 논문은 프랑스 시민사회에서 이루어지는 시민성 함양 교육을 파악하기 위해서는 민중교육이라는 고유한 전통을 이해해야 한다고 주장한다. 그런 관점에서, 민중교육 전통의 제도화과정을 검토하면서 그 안에 담겨 있는 정치적 이념과 시민교육적 요소들을 탐색하고자 한다. 프랑스 민중교육 전통은 18세기 계몽철학, 특히 콩도르세의 교육사상을 기원으로 하며, 19세기동안 세속적 공화주의, 사회적 기독교주의, 혁명적 노동자주의라는 세 가지 흐름으로 나타났다. 민중교육 운동은 한편으로 모두에게 제공되는 일반교육과 공화국 시민을 양성하는 시민교육차원의 공교육으로 제도화되었고, 다른 한편으로는 기독교와 노동운동 영역에서 농민과 노동자, 그리고 성인을 대상으로 하는 시민사회 차원의 민중교육운동으로 지속되었다. 민중교육의정신에는 교육의 권리를 모두에게 동등하게 보장해야 한다는 생각이 깔려있을 뿐만 아니라, 교 육을 통해서 민주주의와 사회적 권리의 확대 같은 사회 발전을 추구한다는 점에서 그 자체로오늘날 시민교육의 위상을 포함한다. 그 결과, 프랑스에서는 우리가 광의의 시민교육이라고 부를 수 있는 교육영역 역시 민중교육이라는 보다 넓은 범주 안에서 다루어진다.

영문 초록

This study argues that it is crucial to understand the tradition of popular education in order to grasp citizenship education performed by civil society in France. With this perspective, while reviewing the institutionalization process of the traditions of popular education, it investigates their ideological, and civil educational factors. The traditions of popular education in France originated from the Enlightenment, particularly the educational thought of Condorcet, and it was developed into three major trends in the 19th century: Secular republicanism, Social Christianism and Revolutionary workerism. The popular education, in one hand, was institutionalize as general education, provided to everyone, and as public education in the way of civic education for nurturing the citizens of the Republic. On the other hand, it was continued to education targeting peasants, workers and adults in the realm of christianity and labour movements. On the basis of the popular education, there lies the belief that the right to education must be guaranteed equally to everyone, and it pursues social developments, such as expansion of democracy and social rights via education. Accordingly, in France, the educational field, which we may call as civic education in a broad sense, is within the boundary of popular education.
