옛 부평지역의 땅이름에 관한 조사연구

국문 초록

부평은 주부토(主夫吐), 장제(長堤), 수주(樹州), 안남(安南), 계양(桂陽), 길주(吉州), 부평(富平) 등으로 읍호가 바뀌어 왔으며, 고려 충선왕 2년(1310)에 부평부(富平府)가 된 이래 부평이란 이름만으로도 근 700년 가까이를 이어 오고 있다. 이 연구는 이와 같은 옛 부평지역 중에서 특히 부평구를 중심으로 한 땅이름을 조사ㆍ연구한 것이다. 땅이름 조사ㆍ연구는 무엇보다 세밀한 자료의 채집에서 시작된다. 이를 위해 연구자는 필요한 각종 문헌을 수집하여 참고하였을 뿐만 아니라, 여러 차례 각 동(洞)을 직접 순회ㆍ답사하고 노인정을 찾아 토박이 주민을 만나는가 하면 필요한 경우 산에도 오르고 개울도 찾아 땅이름을 채집하는데 상당한 노력을 기울였다. 그 결과 부평구지역에서 모두 287개의 땅이름이 채집된 것이다 여하튼 이렇게 채집된 땅이름을 정리하는데 있어서, 이 연구 제2장에서 부평구의 개황과 유래를 간단히 살펴 본 다음 제3장에서 각 동별로 채집된 땅 이름을 27개 항목에 따라 분류하여 그 실태를 파악하고, 제4장에서는 이것을 다시 유래적 측면과 계통적 측면으로 재분류하여 그 땅이름의 내력과 말의 쓰임을 가려 본다. 부평구 21개 동 중 십정1동이 36개(12.5%), 부평1동 27개(9.4%), 일신동 21개(7.3)의 순으로 땅이름이 많이 채집되었으며 산곡2동이나 부개3동은 거의 없는 편이다. 부평구지역의 땅이름을 유래적인 측면에서 살펴보면, 위치로 인해 생겨난 것이 28.7%로 가장 많고 다음 관념적인 것에서 생성된 땅이름이 17.4%, 모양에서 비롯된 것이 10.5%로 많게 나타났으며, 다음 계통적 측면에서 살펴보면, 한자말이 54.7%로 반 이상이나 될 정도로 가장 많았고, 다음 토박이말 30.7%, 섞임말 10.5%의 순으로 나타났다. 한자말이 전체 이름의 반 이상이나 된다는 것은 이 지역이 그만큼 우리 고유의 문화보다 외래문화(한자문화)를 숭상하는 영향을 많이 받았기 때문이라고 볼 수 있는데, 앞으로 이 지역에서 행정상 이유로나 그 밖의 이유로 새로운 땅이름을 지어 쓰게 될 때에는 이러한 점을 감안하여 한자말보다는 토박이말 땅이름을 잘 활용하여 쓰는 것이 필요하다 하겠다.

영문 초록

Pupyong, now a local district in Inchon, in its long history had been given such various names as Jubuto, Jangje, Suju, Annam, Gyeyang, Gilju. In 1310 Pupyong had become a dynasty s administrative district and since then it has been named as Pupyong. This study deals with the names of the various places, which now belong in the Pupyong district. The salient character of this study lies in that it is based on the abundant and detailed materials. The author has collected many kinds of historical books and has incorporated them into this study. He has visited in person the places and has had direct interviews with the oldest inhabitants of the places. These efforts of the author has resulted in the collection of 287 place names. This study can be summarized as follows : The first chapter is an introductory description. The second chapter is concerned with the history of Pupyong district. The third chapter classifies the names of places according to the 27 conceptual categories. The fourth chapter intends to present the history and uses of the names of places. And this chapter classifies the names of places from the perspective of genetical history as well as from the etymological perspective. Viewed from the perspective of genetical history : 28.7% of all the names of places are made according to their natural location. 17.4% of all the names of places are coined according to the imagination of the inhabitants. 10.5% of all the names of places came into being according to their natural form and appearance. Viewed from the etymological perspective : 54.7 of all the names derived from chinese characters. 30.7% of all the names originated from Korean. 10.5% of all the names adopted the combined form of chinese characters and korean language. In conclusion the author argues that in the future the names of places of Pupyong should be changed or coined based on the korean language.
