영흥ㆍ대부도의 종교문화 고찰

국문 초록

대부도와 영흥도는 고대부터 중국으로 통하는 해상 교통로의 거점이었다. 19세기 중국을 통해 들어오는 서구문화를 받아들이는 데 유리한 조건을 갖추고 있었기 때문에, 기독교문화 중심의 종교문화를 형성하면서 교육 사회면에서 현대화를 이룩하는 계기를 갖게 되었다. 그러나 외래 종교인 기독교문화를 정착시켜 가는 과정에서 한민족의 전통 민간신앙은 쇠퇴하였고, 주민들의 생활 속에서나 볼 수 있는 재가 신앙으로 전락하였다. 영흥 대부도 주민들이 지켜오던 민간 신앙의 형태는 크게 3가지로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째는 신령이 인생의 길흉화복을 지배한다고 믿는 무속신앙이고 둘째는 사주팔자로 인생의 운명이 결정되어 있다고 믿는 점복, 예언 신앙이며, 셋째는 풍수지리가 인생과 역사의 흥망성쇠를 결정한다고 믿는 풍수 도참 신앙이다. 위와 같은 민간신앙의 형태를 내용 면에서 보면, 산신제, 풍어제, 성황당, 삼신, 선왕 신, 경 읽기, 가내신 등이다. 이러한 민간 신앙은 형식이나 내용 면에서 조직적이지 못하고 윤리체계를 갖추지 못하여 문화종교인 기독교 문화에 밀려 신앙으로서의 가치를 상실하였다. 지금은 주민들의 습관이나 생활양식의 일부로 남아있을 뿐이다. 기독교 문화도 천주교와 개신 교단의 적극적인 활동으로 양적인 면에서 두 지역에 많은 교회가 세워져 있으나 주민에 대한 기독교 이념 확산에 머물 뿐, 종교 문화로서의 기능발휘에는 아직 한계가 있었다. 지역사회 발전이나 교육활동에 있어서 기독교 문화의 영향력은 크지 않았다. 교회수가 증가하는 것도 도시화 과정에서 인구 증가로 인한 의도적인 선교활동 차원에서 이루어지는 것이지, 주민들의 종교적인 열의에 의해서 이루어지는 것은 아닌 것 같다. 따라서 기독교는 교회 증설과 신도 확보에만 관심을 가지지 말고 종교 문화 차원에서 지역발전에 더 많은 관심을 가져야한다. 또한 다종교 문화인 한국의 전통적인 종교문화를 감안하여 유일신을 신봉하는 기독교 이념에 배치되지 않는, 한국인 고유의 가치를 과감하게 수용할 수 있는 기독교 토착화에 더 많은 관심을 가져야 할 것이다. 외래종교 문화의 유입에 따른 전통적인 민간신앙간의 역학관계를 이해하고, 도시화 과정에서 오는 종교문화의 변천에 따른 제반 요인을 알아보는데 목적을 두고 연구한 본 논문은 한국의 종교문화 발전을 위한 기본자료 제공이라는 점에 가치가 있다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

The aim of this article is threefold. First, it briefly examines the religious culture in Taebu-do and youngheung-do province(islets). Second, it discusses some posible explanations for such an religious attitude, and third, in the light of exclusivism in christianty, it sugests a few tips which might help the korean christian to advance into a pluralistic view of religion. There has developed lack of traditional custom and religious attitude. Most people, regardless of their traditional thought and ethics. In the country(islets), many social changes are occurring in all levels of society. The traditional strict faith is giving way to modifictions stimulated by increasing contacts with other cultures, including western culture(christianity). Christianity has introduced a new appreciation of the value, of the faith, especcially native korean religions a superficial overlay of western thought patterns has changed the outward appearance of many. Because, of this overlay of christian faith that the inner man has changed. Relatively many residents have undergone substaintial changes in their basic ways of thinking and acting but residents are in reality more traditional custom(confucian) than christian in their attitudes and actions. Residents live in a moral climate that is so different that in western religion(christianity). The ethics practiced are a modification of confucianism Buddhism has been modified and there is heavy pressure to modify christianity nearer th the korean model. There is no doubt that the christianity brought about benefits to mankind, especially religions culture. However, it has also produced religions exclusirism found in korean christianity. It is not easy to give up the old way s and, with many changes in the mode of living brought about by modern cities, there is a real problem for residents in deciding what is worth keeping from the past and what should be modified. Now, christianity must accept plurality of religious traditions in Korea.
