책에 대한 학제적 연구의 필요성과 방안

국문 초록

책에 대한 연구는 주로 ‘책의 역사’와 ‘출판학’이라는 제도 학문에서 이루어져 왔다. 그런데 책의 역사가 지향하는 출판·독서의 사회문화사와 출판학이 지향하는 사회학적인 출판 연구에는 상당한 유사점이 있으며 양쪽의 목표를 위해서는 학제적 연구가 효과적이다. 본 연구는 책의 역사와 출판학의 기존 연구들을 검토하여 학제적 연구의 필요성을 주장함과 동시에 책에 대한 역사학과 사회학의 학제적 연구에 도움이 될만한 세 가지 방안을 제시하였다. 첫째, 책의 전반적인 순환 과정을 한꺼번에 연구 대상으로 삼지 않고 구체적인 과정과 중심 행위자를 대상으로 제한하여 실증적인 분석을 해야 한다. 둘째, 독서 연구와 출판연구로 갈려 있는 각각의 연구 전통을 존중하되, 미흡한 분야에 좀더 신경을 기울임으로써 균형을 맞춰야 한다. 출판 연구에도 역사적 접근이 도움이 될 수 있으며 독서 연구에서도 사회학적 유형화나 일반화가 충분히 가능하다. 셋째, 연구의 배경이 현재에 가까운 시기일수록 학제적 연구에 유리하다.

영문 초록

Research on books has mainly been done in institutional sciences such as ‘The history of the book’ and ‘Publishing science’. However, there are significant similarities between sociocultural history of publishing and reading, which is the goal of The history of the book, and sociological publishing study, which Publishing science aims at, therefore interdisciplinary research is effective for both goals. This study affirmed the necessity of interdisciplinary research on books and suggested three ways to help it by examining the precedent researches of The history of the book and Publishing science. First, it is necessary to carry out an empirical analysis by restricting the research object to specific parts and agents, instead of studying the overall circular flow of books at once. Second, we should keep a balance between reading and publishing studies, by paying more attention to each weak point, although respecting each research tradition. Historical approaches to publishing studies can also be helpful, and sociological generalizations are possible in reading studies. Third, the research background is the closer to the present, the more favorable for the interdisciplinary study.
