인도불교사상사에서 유식사상의 연속성과 불연속성 －법과 법성의 관계를 중심으로

국문 초록

일반적으로 인도불교사상사에서 ‘연기사상(pratītyasaṃutpāda, 緣起)’은 부파나 학파에 따라 매우 다양하게 해석되지만, 이는 ‘법(dharma)’의 다양한 개념형성과 긴밀한 관계를 가진 불교사상체계의 요체로서 간주된다. 사실 초기불교의 ‘연기사상’은 대체로 4제 연기나 12연기 등 매우 다양한 교설의 형태로 제시된다. 이러한 연기사상은 주로 ‘연기와 법(dharma, 法)’이나 ‘연기와 공성 (śūnyatā, 空性) 등의 관련 맥락 속에서 아비다르마 불교와 반야･중관을 거쳐 유식사상에 이르기까지 다양한 형태로 제시되고 있다. 따라서 이 논문은 인도불교사상사에서 연기사상의 그 사상적 전개양상에 주목하여, 주로 ‘연기와 법’이나 ‘연기와 공성’ 등의 관련성과 그 사상적･철학적 함의에 초점을 두고 초기유식사상이 가지는 그 사상적 연속성과 불연속성적인 특성을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 이 논문은 인도불교사상사에서 이제와 삼성설이 성립되기 이전과 그 이후로 대별하여, 결국 초기 유식사상은 ⓐ법성에서 법으로의 사상적 전환과 ⓑ법에서 법성 으로의 사상적 전환이라는 두 양상으로 전개되어 왔음을 명확히 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This paper purports to probe into the structure of the ontology of the early Yogācāra-vijñānavāda and its significance in the history of the development of Buddhist doctrines with special reference to the relationship between the Three Natures and the Two Truths. It especially focuses on the understanding of the doctrinal and structural relation between the ‘vastu’ in the Chapter of the Tattvārtha in the Bodhisattva-bhūmi and the ‘abhūtaparikalpa’ in the Madhyāntavibhāga. These concepts are understood to have served as the prototypes of the Theory of the Three Natures prior to the doctrinal systematization of the notion of vijñapti-mātra. This study is based upon the hermeneutical ground of the Tridharmacakra advanced at the end of the Chapter of the Niḥsvabhāvalakṣaṇa in the Saṃdhinirmocanasūtra and the hermeneutical stance of Vasubandhu put forward in the explanation of the Theory of the Two Truths of the Yogācāra-vijñānavāda in his Vyākhyāyukti.
