전통적 지명 연구의 비판적 독해

국문 초록

본 논문은 지명 전쟁의 종식이라는 지명 연구에 대한 시대적 요청에 부응하기 위해 전통적 지명 연구의 방법론을 재검토하고 지금까지 부진하게 진행되어온 지명의 위치와 영역 연구를 부각시키면서 앞으로 요구되는 통합적이고 학제적인 지명 연구의 필요성을 제기하고자 기획되었다. 이를 위해 신경준(1756)의 『강계고』 서문을 사례로 한국의 전통적 지명연구를 언어 내적인 차자표기 분석 방법과 언어 외적인 지명영역 분석 방법으로 나누어 재검토하고, 이에 내재한 인식론적, 방법론적 결함과 보완점을 비판적으로 제시하였다. 우선 우리나라 지명사에있어 가장 큰 문제인 (고)지명의 위치 및 영역 부재 문제를 진단하고, 이에 대한 처방을 크게 4가지로 제시하였다. 첫째, 전통적 지명 연구의 토대 위에 지금까지 소홀하게 다루어온 공간, 고유 지명, 야외 현지조사의 방법이 보완 및 절충되어야 한다. 둘째, 전통적 지명연구에서 도외시되어온 지명과 권력 사이의 관계, 특히 과거 지식인및 지식권력에 의해 고유 지명이 왜, 어떻게, ‘훈차표기’ 되거나 개명되었는지를 연구해야 한다. 셋째, 지명은 누군가의 의도와 권력에 의해 이식, 재위치, 월경, 혹은 경합되는 존재임을 인식해야 한다. 마지막으로 앞으로의 지명 연구는 기존의 분과 학문적 폐쇄성을 극복하여 통합적이고 학제적인 방법으로 진행되어야 한다.

영문 초록

This article examines traditional Korean toponymy in which two main methods have been divided into the intra-linguistic, loan transcription approach and the extra-linguistic, toponymic territory approach in the case study on the Preface of 『疆界考』(Ganggyego, Geographical Explanation of the Korean Territory and Border) written by Sin Gyeong-Jun (1756), as well as considering defects and countermeasures in the epistemology and methodology intrinsic to the traditional toponymy. Above all, I diagnosed the problems related to locating the exact sites and territories of ancient toponyms, which is the biggest and most complicated question in the history of Korean toponymy, and suggest a prescription for locating toponyms in four ways. First, the researchers of toponymy should put the concepts such as space, pure Korean toponym, and fieldwork on a sound footing of traditional toponymy, which has been neglected by toponymists. Second, the researchers must study the relations between toponymy and power, especially, how and why the pure Korean toponyms have been transcribed in the Chinese characters through the semantic transcription by the intellectual class. Third, the researchers should recognize that a toponym is a political and social construct transplanted, relocated, transgressed, and contested. Lastly, the future toponymy has to be performed in the integrated and interdisciplinary approach, leaping over the closing fence of the pre-existing academic discipline.
