국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 넬 나딩스의 행복교육론에 대해 고찰하는데 있다. 세계적으로 나딩스의 교육사상은 ‘배려’와 ‘행복’이 두 축을 이루는 것으로 평가받고 있으나, 국내의 나딩스에 관한 연구는 여전히 배려교육에만 매달려 있는 것이 현실이다. 이에 연구자는 나딩스의 『행복과 교육(Happiness and Educa tion, 2003)』을 중심으로 행복교육의 내용을 살펴보고자 한다. 먼저 행복교육론을 고찰하기에 앞서 그 사상적 배경이 되는 배려이론에 대해서 알아본다. 이를 통해 행복교육론과 배려교육론의 관계를 검토할 수 있을 것이다. 이어지는 행복교육론은 ‘교육목적으로서의 행복’, ‘개인생활을 위한 교육’, ‘공적생활을 위한 교육’으로 이루어진다. 나딩스는 행복교육론의 내용에 대해 본격적으로 논하기에 앞서 교육목적에 대한 담론의 부활을 촉구하며, 행복이 새로운 교육목적이 되어야 한다고 주장한다. 행복교육의 내용에서는 개인생활과 공적생활에 있어 어떤 요소들이 행복을 추구할 수 있는지를 상세히 밝힘으로써, 행복교육론의 얼개를 구성한다. 나딩스의 행복교육론은 다양한 교육정책을 실시하며 시행착오를 거듭하고 있는 우리 교육계에 시사하는 바가 크다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to reconsider the importance of happiness education in Nel noddings’ theory. Although Noddings’ educational thought has been internationally recognized as based on two main ideas-that is, ‘care’ and ‘happiness’, researchers in Korea are still focusing exclusively on the former, while widely neglecting the latter. For this reason, in this paper, I will delve into Noddings’ idea of happiness education in depth, concentrating on her book, Happiness and Education. Before touching on the main thesis of happiness education, I will first consider her theory of caring as constituting the ground of happiness education and make it manifest the relationship between care and happiness education. Happiness education consists in three basic concepts-‘happiness as an aim of life and education’, ‘educating for personal life’ and ‘educating for public life’. Noddings argues that in order to delineate the content of happiness education, we should first revive the discussion of educational teleology and place happiness as a new aim of education. Based on this educational teleology, Noddings suggests the blueprint of happiness education and offers the methods by which we can obtain happiness in public and private life. Noddings’ happiness education is especially significant to our educational practice that undergoes repeated trial and error because of too many different educational policies.
