피해자와 가해자의 경계에 선 여성 이미지 고찰

국문 초록

타이완의 대표적 여성작가 林海音의 작품 속 여성 주인공들은 대부분 불행하고 비극적인 운명의 여성들로, 林海音은 신구 문화가 혼재된 과도기를 살아가던 대다수의 여성들이 처해있던 가슴 아픈 운명에 대해 깊은 애정과 관심의 끈을 시종일관 놓지 않은 작가이다. 林海音이 만들어낸 소설 속 허구의 세계는 실제 하는 배경과 실제 인물들을 바탕으로 하여, 자신이 몸소 겪어낸 경험인 듯 감정의 결이 그대로 느껴지고 그 시대의 숨결이 생생하게 담겨 있는 사실적인 작품세계라고 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 林海音의 소설 중에서 자신이 어린 시절 직접 보고 들은 실제 여성들의 삶을 모티프로 하여, 그녀들의 힘겨운 삶과 운명을 깊이 있게 통찰한 《金鯉魚的百襇裙》와 《燭》이 두 작품을 선택하여 고찰하였다. 두 소설의 서사와 여성 인물들의 심리 분석을 통해 주름치마와 촛불로 상징되는 여성 이미지의 함의와 피해자와 가해자로서의 양면성을 띤 여성 이미지를 살펴봄으로써 林海音의 작가의식에 한층 더 다가갈 수 있었다. 소설 《金鯉魚的百襇裙》이 첩의 신분인 金鯉魚를 중심으로 이야기가 진행되었다면, 이와는 반대로 소설 《燭》는 정실부인의 입장에서 이야기가 전개되었다. 金鯉魚의 유일한 소망은 자신이 직접 낳아 가문의 대를 잇게 된 아들의 혼례식에 높은 신분을 상징하는 전통 주름치마를 입음으로써 평생 동안의 희생에 대한 자기 보상과 자존감을 찾는 것이었다. 《燭》의 정실부인은 젊은 나이에 남편의 관심과 사랑을 첩에게 빼앗긴 여성으로, 표면적으로는 체면을 유지하며 위엄을 지키나 질투와 증오심에 그녀의 마음은 타들어가는 촛불과도 같았다. 그녀가 촛농을 일부러 손등에 떨어지게 해서 화상을 입는 자학적인 행동은 자신의 억압된 심리와 내재된 분노를 표출하는 방식이라고 볼 수 있다. 시대에 의해 희생당하는 피억압자로서 수동적이고 소극적인 이 두 여성인물은 각각 자기만의 방식으로 반항의식을 보여주지만 여기에는 한계가 있었다. 이들은 여성 상호간에 가해자가 되기도 하고 그 자신 결국 피해자가 되기도 하는 여성 인물들이다. 두 작품의 여성 주인공은 모두 공통적으로 결과적으로는 남성 위주의 사회에 희생된 억압받는 여성주체임을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

One of greatest female writers in Taiwan, Lin Haiyin created female characters of miserable and tragic destiny in most of her works. She kept her deep affection and interest about the painful destiny of most women that lived through a transitional period when the old and new cultures were mixed. The fictional world created by her in her novels is based on actual backgrounds and people, offering a venue for the world of her realistic works in which the readers can feel the emotions of characters that seem to reflect her own experiences and the breath of the times vividly. This study examined her Gold Carp s Pleated Skirt and Candlelight, both of which present a deep insight into the difficult life and destiny of female characters based on the lives of real women that she saw and heard as a child. The study delved into the implications of female images represented by a pleated skirt and candlelight and the double-sided images of women both as victims and offenders by analyzing the narratives of the two works and the psychology of female characters, thus becoming even closer to her consciousness as a writer. While Gold Carp s Pleated Skirt tells stories from the perspective of the concubine Gold Carp, Candlelight tells stories from the perspective of the wife. Gold Carp has one and only wish, and it is to wear the traditional pleated skirt to symbolize a high social rank at the wedding ceremony of her son, who she gave birth to and got to carry on the family line, and thus have self-compensations for her lifelong sacrifice and restore her dignity. In Candlelight, the wife sees her husband lavish his interest and love on his concubine as a young lady. Although she saves her face and keeps her dignity on the surface, her heart is like a candle burning with jealousy and hatred. She tortures herself by dropping wax drippings on the back of her hand and causing a burn, thus expressing her suppressed mind and inherent anger. The two female characters are half-hearted and passive as they are suppressed and victimized by the times. They show a spirit of rebellion in their own respective ways, but they face limitations. They end up falling victims to each other while attacking each other. The two heroines of the novels are eventually female subjects victimized and suppressed by the male-dominant society.
