조선후기 한글소설 《강태공전》의 《封神演義》 번안 양상 小考

국문 초록

본 연구는 조선후기 한글소설 《강태공전》을 중국 명대 神魔小說 《封神演義》의 번안소설로 보고, 《강태공전》의 《封神演義》 번안 양상을 ‘전유(appropriation)’의 개념에 초점을 맞추어 고찰함으로써 번안 메커니즘의 일면을 밝히고 한중 양국의 고소설문화 차이를 탐색하고자 하였다. 조선의 소설독자들은 많은 중국소설들을 원작 그대로가 아니라 자국소설인 양번안하여 ‘전유’하는 경우가 많았는데, 《강태공전》도 그러한 작품들 중 하나이다. 본 연구는 《강태공전》의 《封神演義》 번안 양상을 형식적 전유의 측면, 내용적 전유의 측면, 그리고 여성독자층의 영향 측면에서 살펴보았다. 먼저 형식적 측면의 전유 양상은 다음의 두 가지로 파악되었다. 첫째, 작자는 《封神演義》를 영웅 일대기적 서사구조로 재구성함으로써 조선 영웅소설의 문법을 따르고자 하였다. 둘째, 작자는 축약 번안을 통해 작품 독해의 대중성과 편의성을 도모하였다. 다음으로 내용적 측면의 전유 양상은 다음의 두 가지를 논의하였다. 첫째, 작자는 원작의 환상적 요소들을 축소시키고, 독자들의 역사의식 고취를 통해 현실적인 정치성을 획득하고자 하였다. 둘째, 작자는 번안에 있어 충효 이데올로기의 원칙에 충실하고자 하였다. 마지막으로 여성독자층의 영향에 대해 다음의 두 가지 측면을 고찰하였다. 첫째, 《강태공전》은 장편국문소설의 정실(선)-첩(악) 대비구조 차용 및 마씨고사의 강조를 통해 여성독자들에게 선과 내조의 덕목을 권하고자 하였다. 둘째, 소설의 주요독자층이었던 규방 여성들의 분노심을 투사하여 雪冤의 효과를 거두고자 하였다. 조선의 《강태공전》은 중국의 《封神演義》를 ‘다시쓰기(rewriting)’함으로써 원작을 재구성하고 새로운 의미를 창출하였다. 중국소설이 조선에 전파된 후 번역 및 번안되어 조선독자들에게 실질적으로 향유되는 과정에서 발생한 변화의 지점들에 대한 궁금증에 착안하여 진행된 본고의 연구가, 비슷한 듯 하면서 엄연히 다른 한중 양국의 고소설문화에 대한 상호이해의 증진에 일조할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study regards Gangtaegongjeon(姜太公傳) as an adaptation from Fengshenyanyi(封 神演義) and examines the adaptation aspect. The novel readers in late Joseon had a strong tendency to share Chinese novels which were not original texts but rather adaptations, being gone through their own ‘appropriation’ process. Gangtaegongjeon was one of them as well. This study was conducted with three perspectives. Firstly, I discussed the form. I argued that the author of Gangtaegongjeon had attempted to follow the typical narrative structure of Joseon heroic novels including a biography of the one hero. I also investigated that the author had tried to provide convenience for Joseon readers by contracting the original text, resulting in popularization of the text. Secondly, I considered the content. I indicated that the author had attempted to minimize the fictional element and to make the readers have realistic political nature. I also examined that the author had tried not to be against the ideological principle, ‘filial piety(忠孝).’ Thirdly, I investigated the aspects of female readers’ influence to the text. I discussed that Gangtaegongjeon showed the female moral which advised readers to do good and to assist their husband well by means of borrowing the contrastive structure of Korean long piece novels, “legal wife-the good” and “concubine-the evil” and emphasizing on the story of Mrs. Ma(馬). I also indicated that it not only carried the female moral, but also reflected their resentment, resulting in alleviating the chagrin of them. Gangtaegongjeon reorganized Fengshenyanyi by ‘rewriting’ and created a new meaning. I tried to figure out how Joseon readers had actually shared the Chinese classical novels, by investigating the ‘manipulation’ which had been occurred while they had adapted the original text. I believe that this study will be helpful to enhancement of mutual understanding about classical novel culture between Korea and China.
