조선시대 생황의 이중적 상징 의미에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 고대 악기 생황에 대한 본연적 상징 의미와 조선 시대 이중적 상징의 의미를 살핀 글이다. 고대악기로서의 생황의 원시적인 상징은 신성함이다. 생황의 기원설에는 중국 창세신화의 여와가 등장하며, 그에 따르면 생황의 형상은 악(樂)의 신인 봉황을 본떠 만들었다고 한다. 뿐만 아니라 생황은 생동하는 정월의 악기이며, 동양사상인 고대음양설도 이 악기 안에 포함되어 있다. 따라서 조선시대의 생황이 긍정적인 인식을 누릴 수 있었던 이유는 이러한 생황의 근원적 의미인 신성함에서 비롯된 것이라 할 수 있다. 동양사상에 입각한 생황의 등장은 공자의 예악사상과 맞아 떨어졌고, 예악사상을 중시했던 조선시대는 공자가 아꼈던 생황을 더욱 소중히 다뤘다. 특히 생황의 소리는 아름다운 소리 와 조화로운 소리 로 묘사되었는데, 이는 『시경』의 기록과 밀접한 연관을 맺고 있다. 반면, 이러한 생황의 긍정적인 표현 외에도 다수의 부정적인 표현 또한 발견된다. 생황에 대한 부정적 표현의 예로는 대부분 간신의 말 , 교묘한 소리 등과 관계된 비유들을 들 수 있다. 이 같은 부정적 표현과 관련해 주목해야 할 사료는 『시경』과 『한비자』의 기록이다. 『시경』의 교언여황(巧言如簧)이라는 문구와 『한비자』의 우(竽)와 관련된 사건에 대한 기록은 생황을 부정적으로 표현하고 있는 대표적인 예이기 때문이다. 결국 생황의 긍정적, 부정적 표현 모두 단순히 악기의 특성에서 비롯되었다기보다는 예악사상에서 비롯된 표현이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 특히나 악(樂)을 이풍역속을 가능하게 하는 사회 교화적 원리로 받아들였던 공자는 생황의 인식과 관련해 긍정적인 면과 부정적인 면을 모두 취하였고, 따라서 조선시대 관료들 또한 생황과 관련된 이중적 상징 의미를 자유롭게 구사할 수 있었던 것이다.

영문 초록

Saengwhang is a musical instrument, which was imported from China already before the epoch of the Three Kingdoms and ever afterward had shared rise and fall with Korean nation. Especially, it was one of the most important musical instruments, which had played an indispensable role in the transmission of court music. However, phrases and expressions that show directly-opposed symbolic meanings about Saengwhang were strangely often founded in The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. Hereat first, I had researched Saengwhang s ancient original symbolic meaning. And then, I had examined closely the positive and negative real examples in The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, in order to get to the root of such directly-opposed symbolic meanings. First, the original symbolic meaning of Saengwhang as a ancient musical instrument is the sanctity. In the theory of the origin of Saengwhang appears Nuwa, the goddess of Chinese creation mythology. And according to this, it is said that the shape of Saengwhang is modeled on the Bonghwang, the god of music. Besides, in Saengwhang the theory of yin and yang is connoted too. Therefore, we can say that Saengwhang s positive awareness is originated in its sanctity. Furthermore, the symbolic meaning of Saengwhang was harmonized with Yeack ideology of Confucius. And Joseon Dynasty which put emphasis on Yeack ideology had accepted Saengwhang positively and always took care of it. On the other hand, negative expressions about Saengwhang were also often founded in The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. As illustrations of such negative meaning about Saengwhang we may take the metaphors like the words of disloyal subject and fine words etc. In this connect we can take note of historical materials like as The Book of Songs(詩經), Han Fei Tzu(韓非子). One point which claims our attention here is that Confucius had even recognized Saengwhang in two ways, in positive and negative meaning. Eventually, we can say that both the positive and negative symbolic meaning of Saengwhang was originated rather in Yeack ideology of Confucius, than in instrumental characteristics of Saengwhang. Confucius had realized and adopted the both sides of positive and negative symbolic meaning of Saengwhang. And therefore high-ranking government officials of the Joseon Dynasty also could freely adopt and express both symbolic meanings of Saengwhang.
