처용탈 복원 제작 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 『악학궤범』 처용탈 도상을 모본으로 처용탈의 형태와 색상, 그리고 사용된 재료를 역사적 고증을 통해 규명해 내고, 실제 복원에 활용할 수 있는 근거를 제공하는데 목적이 있다. 현재 국립국악원·처용무보존회·한국예술종합학교 등 각급기관에서 사용하고 있는 처용탈은 『악학궤범(樂學軌範)』 도상과 비교해 볼 때 형태적으로 많은 차이를 보인다. 본 연구는 그 원인을 세 가지로 파악했는데, 전통을 온전히 잇지 못한 점, 처용탈 복원에 필요한 고증이 엄밀하지 못했던 점, 그리고 처용탈 복원의 미술 분야를 책임지는 아트디렉터(art director)의 부재가 바로 그것이다. 본 연구는 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 다음과 같은 복원 방법을 통해 처용탈의 형태, 색상, 재료를 파악하고자 하였다. 첫째, 『악학궤범』에 나타난 처용탈 도상을 복원의 모본으로 삼아, 처용탈의 정확한 형태를 구했다. 둘째, 도상기록을 통해 처용탈 색상을 구했다. 셋째, 의궤 기록을 통해 처용탈 재료를 파악했다. 그 외에 사료와 문집에 나타난 처용탈 관련 기사를 검색했다. 또한 근대 기록물을 살펴서 전승과정과 변이 등을 살펴보았다. 특히 처용탈 관련 기사는 『악학궤범』 이전의 처용 형상 혹은 처용탈의 흔적을 관념적으로나마 파악할 수 있어 처용탈 복원의 방향을 제시해준다. 연구의 말미에서 처용탈 복원을 위한 두 가지 실제 제작 방식을 제안했다. 하나는 전통 방식을 따른 처용탈 복원 방식이고, 또 하나는 전통 방식의 문제를 개선한 방식이다. 두 가지 방식 모두 형태와 색감은 고증에 의한다. 마지막으로 처용탈 복원을 위해 아트디렉터의 영입을 제안했다. 아트 디렉터는 미학적 역량을 갖춘 전문가의 식견으로 형태와 색상을 정확히 재현해낼 수 있기 때문이다. 이와 같은 연구 결과와 제언이 현행 처용탈을 개선할 수 있는 계기가 되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the forms, colors and materials of Cheoyongtal based on the icons of Cheoyongtal in Akhakgwebeom with the historical researches, and to present the ground to applicate to practical restoration. Cheoyongtal using in agencies of various levels such as National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts and Korea National University of Arts, make many differences in forms compared with icons of Cheoyongtal in Akhakgwebeom. In this study, I confirmed it s reasons as follows ; the failure of intact succession of traditions, false historical researches on the restoration of Cheoyongtal and the absence of art director responsible for art field. To solve these problems, I intended to figure out forms, colors and materials of Cheoyongtal with the following ways of restoration. Firstly, I looked for the exact forms based on the icon of Cheoyongtal in Akhakgwebeom. Secondly, I identified the colors of Cheoyongtal through the iconographic records. Thirdly, I examined the materials of Cheoyongtal through the documents in uigwe. Besides, I searched articles associated with Cheoyongtal in historical records and collection of works, and investigated the inheritance processes and modifications. Especially, articles associated with Cheoyongtal presented the direction on restoration of Cheoyongtal, examining Cheoyong figuration or trace of Cheoyongtal ideologically before the publication of Akhakgwebeom. In the end of this study I proposed two methods on the real production of Cheoyongtal. The one is the traditional way of restoration, the other is the improved way of restoration of traditional way. And in each ways, forms and colors are dependent on the historical researches. Finally, I proposed recruit of art director for the restoration of Cheoyongtal, because art director can exactly represent the forms and colors with the professional intelligent based on the aesthetic capability. I expect these results and proposals can improve current Cheoyongtal.
