시정오년기념조선물산공진회의 기생의 춤 공연에 대한 연구

국문 초록

시정오년기념조선물산공진회는 일제가 조선 지배를 시작한지 5년이 됨을 기념하여 1915년 가을에 경성의 경복궁에서 개최된 박람회였다. 조선총독부는 식민지로 병합한 조선에 대해 근대화와 식민화를 선전하고, 조선인을 교육하기 위해 이 박람회를 준비하였다. 공진회에 대한 대대적인 홍보를 위해 광교기생조합과 다동기생조합, 신창기생조합 기생들이 동원되었다. 또한 공진회의 여흥을 주관한 경성협찬회는 9월 11일부터 10월 31일까지 연예관과 조선연극장을 운영했는데, 연예관에서 광교기생조합과 다동기생조합의 기생들이 주간과 야간에 매일 공연하게 했고, 조선연극장에서는 신창기생조합의 기생과 재인 광대들이 공연하게 했다. 이 기간에 노래와 악기 연주를 제외하고, 광교조합과 다동조합, 신창조합 기생들은 궁중무 30종목, 민속춤 6종목, 창작춤 6종목을 추었던 것이다. 시정오년기념물산공진회에서 행해진 기생의 공연은 전통시대와 현대를 잇는 중요한 공연이었다. 공진회에서 추어진 춤 공연의 근대무용사적 의의를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이 공연은 대한제국 시기 1901년과 1902년의 궁중연회 이후 최대 규모의 궁중무 공연이었고, 민간에서 활동하게 된 기생들이 기생조합을 통해 궁중무를 계승했음을 보여주었다. 둘째, 춤 활동의 환경이 변화함에 따라, 궁중무의 큰 틀을 유지했지만, 궁중무의 변화를 감지할 수 있었다. 셋째, 새로운 춤으로 <시정오년기념성택무>와 <철도축하무>가 만들어졌고, <성진무>, <서민안락무>, <앵정무>, <여흥무>가 추어졌다. <성진무>와 <서민안락무>는 근대로 접어들면서 1910년대 초중반에 대중의 호응을 얻었던 창작춤이었다. 넷째, 연예관과 조선연극장 공연에서 <승무>, <검무>, <남무> 등의 민속춤이 빠지지 않았다. 민간과 극장에서 활동하기 시작한 기생들이 민속춤을 레파토리로 적극 수용했던 것이다.

영문 초록

The Competitive Exhibition of Local Products for the Fifth Anniversary of New Politics was held at Gyeongbok Palace in the autumn of 1915 to commemorate the fifth year of Japanese rule of Joseon. The Japanese Government General of Korea was thorough with its preparation for the exhibition to promote modernization and colonization to Joseon merged as a colony of Japan and educate Joseon people. The Gisaengs of the Gwanggyo, Dadong, and Shinchang Gisaeng Associations were mobilized to promote the exhibition on a large scale. The Entertainment Hall and the Joseon Theater were operated between September 11 and October 30 by the Gyeongseong Sponsors Conference that organized the entertainment of the exhibition. The Entertainment Hall featured daily daytime and nighttime performances by the Gisaengs of the Gwanggyo and Dadong Gisaeng Associations, while the Joseon Theater put on performances by the Gisaengs and clowns of Shinchang Gisaeng Association. During the period, Gwanggyo and Dadong and Shinchang Gisaeng Associations performed total 30 events of court dance, 5 events of folk dance, and 6 events of creative dance at the exhibition in 1915. The performances by the Gisaengs at the exhibition were importance opportunities to connect the traditional era with the modern times. The dance performances at the exhibition have the following significance in the history of modern dance: first, those were the largest-scale performance of court dance since the banquets of 1901 and 1902 during the Korean Empire. Gisaengs got to perform in the private sector after the abolition of court Yeoak in 1908, but the ones belonging to a Gisaeng association succeeded court dance. Secondly, they created such event dances as Seongtaek Dance for the Fifth Anniversary of New Politics and Congratulatory Dance of Railroads and performed such new dances as Aengjeong Dance, Seongjin Dance, Seominanrak Dance and Yeoheung Dance. While event dances were created in a political situation of Japanese rule, new ones were created in a social situation of entering the modern period. Finally, the nighttime performances always featured such folk dances as Buddhist Dance, Sword Dance, and Nam Dance at the Entertainment Hall. The Gisaengs that started to be active in the private sector and theaters actively accepted folk dance as part of their repertoires.
