영문 초록

The share of service activities in the total economy has steadily increased and was recorded to 54.4% in 1990 in terms of occupation employment. The strong growth of service industries in recent decades has stimulated considerable research on the nature of service sector and its spatial role in the regional development. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to identify the relationship between service industries and urban growth. Manufacturing has long been the heart of development theory but service activities has regarded as nonbasic to regional development. Service activities are becoming a target of regional development policies, due to the recognition that many of them, especially producer services, have a directly and indirectly basic character. In general, service activities tend to be geographically concentrated in large metropolitan areas which provide suitable locational environment. Service industries in urban Korea are also highly concentrated in large cities with mare than one million population. The share of consumer services in the whole service is much higher than that of producer services. High growth urban services can be found in such activities as insurance, real estate in producer services and sanitary, recreation/culture in consumer services. Urban services in intermediate cities show higher growth rate than that of the other class of cities. According to the shift-share analysis, national growth effects are important to explain the services growth in metropolitan cities and/or small cities while regional share effects are crucial to that of intermediate cities. The intensity of relationship between urban growth and services growth differs from cities; urban areas in Capital and East South Region reveal the higher correlationship than that of the other Regions. In sum, it can be said that there reveals some positive relationship between the growth of service activities and urban growth.
