이 논문은 제2차 바티칸 공의회 이후 인도에서 타 종교들을 향해 어떠한 접근이 이루어져 왔는가를 광범위하게 되짚어 보고 있다. 이는 다종교적 배경을 갖고 있는 인도의 신학에 있어 매우 핵심적인 주제들 중 하나로 부각되어 왔다. 공의회 초기에 가톨릭은 타종교에 대해 다분히 교회중심적인 태도를 취했다. 하지만 이는 곧 포괄주의적 자세로 전환되었다. 그러한 맥락에서 후대에는 일부 인도 신학자들에 의해 신중심주의적, 비이원론적인 새로운 신학적 패러다임을 정립하려는 시도가 생겨나기도 하였다. 하지만 이들은 일부 가톨릭 신앙에 받아들여질 수 없는 의미를 함축하고 있다는 이유로 대부분 부적합하고 실패한 것으로 판명되었다. 이들은 교도권, 특히 신앙교리성이 발표한 문헌 「주님이신 예수님」에 의해 기각되고 말았다. 지금까지 일반적으로 수용되고 있는 것은 포괄주의적 모델, 특히 칼 라너의 입장이라 할 수 있다. 인도의 종교신학은 전통 교의와 새로운 패러다임의 추구 사이에서 여전히 ‘나그네적’ 성격을 유지하고 있다.

영문 초록

The article traces the history of the post-Conciliar scenario in India as regards the approaches towards religions in its broad lines. This issue has been one of the focal points of Indian theology, given the multi-religious context of India. During the early post-Conciliar era, Catholic stances regarding other religions have tended to be largely ecclesiocentric. In course of time there has been a shift to an inclusivistic stance. During the latter part of the period under consideration, there have been attempts on the part of particular Indian scholars to articulate new theological paradigms such as the theocentric and the non-dualistic, which, however, have proved by and large unsuccessful and inadequate, because of some of their unacceptable implications for the Catholic faith. These have been rejected by the Magisterium, especially in the document of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith “Dominus Iesus”. To date, the stance generally accepted seems to be the inclusivistic model ― and specifically that of Karl Rahner. The theology of religions in India still retains its “wayfaring” characteristic, situated as it is, between a creed and its quest.
