국문 초록

성녀 글라라의 영성과 삶은 현대를 사는 여성 수도자들과 교회안에서 헌신하는 여성들의 귀감이 된다. 하지만, 성 프란치스코의 영적 동반으로만 비추어지는 성 글라라의 삶과 영성은 잘 알려지지 않았으며, 그녀가 교회 역사상 처음으로 수도회 규칙을 쓴 여성이라는 것을 아는 사람은 드물다. 성 글라라의 영성은 근원적 가난(radical poverty)을 중심으로 한 독립적인 사도적 자유(apostolic freedom)를 추구한 12~13세기를 배경으로 하는 여성 운동 차원에서 이해되어야 한다. 성 글라라의 영성은 12~13세기 도시화 과정에서 야기되었던 빈부의 격차, 그에 따른 가난의 영성 출현, 그리고 베긴 무브먼트(Beguine movement) 등의 역사적 배경에서 비롯되며, 가난을 살고자 하는 다른 여성들과의 진한 연대에서 빛을 발하게 된다. 특별히, 가난을 사는 공동체로서의 카리즈마를 지키기 위한 성 글라라와 글라라의 작은 자매회가 겪은 교계 제도와의 갈등은 성녀가 쓴 규칙이 교회로부터 인가를 받음으로써 마무리된다. 성 글라라의 규칙과 다른 저서들에서 보듯이, 성녀의 삶은 적빈의 예수를 거울처럼 비추는 삶이었으며, 철저한 가난을 통해, 영적인 자유와 사랑을 보여 주는 삶이었다. 성 글라라의, 부르심에 충실했던 삶은 가난이라는 영적인 부를 통해, 진정한 권위와 힘을 보여 주는 실례다.

영문 초록

Often Clare is depicted as “a holy companion of Francis”. Besides a good friend of Francis of Assisi, her life and her struggle as an independent religious woman in the Church is remarkable. Clare’s spirituality can be understood as an integral part of women’s movements such as Beguine and household women’s communities, as well as an emerging spirituality of poverty in 13~14th century Europe. Clare pursued a form of evangelical religious life, represented by radical poverty, mirroring the poor Christ. In the process of pursuing radical poverty, she undertook conflict with the Papacy, and finally her way of life was approved by the Church. Her spirituality of poverty brought Clare and her community freedom, authority, and power. In this way, Clare’s spirituality is congruent with that of medieval women, which claims holiness as power. Her life, including her decision of conscientious disobedience, exemplifies a life of commitment to the vita apostolica through radical poverty.
