생태 위기 시대를 위한 가톨릭 사회 교리

국문 초록

인간에 의한 환경 파괴는 새로운 형태의 ‘사회적 죄’이다. 그래서 현대의 신앙인들은 이에 관한 가톨릭교회의 진단 내용과 극복 방향을 올바로 인식할 필요가 있다. 그러기 위해서 꼭 필요한 영역이 바로 ‘가톨릭 사회 교리’이다. 가톨릭 사회 교리는 사회 문제에 관한 가톨릭교회의 시각을 제공해 주는데, 환경 문제도 그 주요 관심사 중의 하나이다. 이 글에서는 역대 교황들의 다양한 문헌들을 중심으로 조금씩 산재해 있는 환경 문제 관련 사회 교리의 요지를 시기별 문헌별로 살펴보았다. 그리고 2004년 ‘교황청 정의평화평의회’가 발간한 간추린 사회 교리 의 환경 관련 가르침도 고찰하였다. 이것은 그동안 교회가 각종 공식 문헌들을 통하여 환경 문제에 관하여 가르쳐 온 사회 교리의 핵심 내용을 요약해 놓은 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이런 문헌 고찰을 통하여 네 가지의 주제를 정리해 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 가톨릭 사회 교리는 생태 위기의 문제가 정의와 평화의 문제들과 긴밀하게 연결되어 있다고 가르친다. 둘째, 가톨릭 사회 교리는 위기 극복을 위해 과학 기술적 방법의 긍정적 기여를 인정하지만 그것이 근본적 해결책은 아니라고 가르친다. 그래서 과학 기술적 방법과 더불어 인간 의식의 변화가 반드시 있어야만 이 위기를 극복할 수 있다고 가르친다. 셋째, 가톨릭 사회 교리는 ‘생태 중심주의’와 ‘절대적 인간 중심주의’를 배격하고 ‘그리스도교 인간 중심주의’의 올바른 구현이 생태 위기 극복의 열쇠라고 가르친다. 넷째, 가톨릭 사회 교리는 생태 위기의 극복을 위한 신자들의 동참이 곧 ‘신앙적 요청’이라고 강조한다. 자원을 남용하고 지구를 파괴하는 것은 그 자체로 불의이고 범죄라는 것이다.

영문 초록

Destruction of the environment by human beings is a new form of ‘social sin.’ Christians today need to become aware of the diagnosis of information offered by the Catholic Church and the direction it shows to overcome these issues; Catholic Social Teaching is an important area for creating this awareness. In this dissertation, I reviewed some essential points of social teaching about environmental issues in the various pontifical doctrinal statements, document by document, in chronological order. I also reviewed the teaching on the environment in the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church which was published by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in 2004. This dissertation is the summary of the core contents of social teaching about environmental issues in the various official documents of the Church and I have come up with four themes through my review of these documents. Firstly, Catholic Social Teaching shows us that the issues of Peace and Justice are closely connected with the issue of the eco-crisis. Secondly, Catholic Social Teaching recognizes the positive contribution of Science and Technology in overcoming the crisis, but it states clearly that theirs is not the essential solution. It therefore focuses on the importance of a change of mentality in human persons, together with the methods of Science and Technology, as a process for overcoming the eco-crisis. Thirdly, Catholic Social Teaching teaches that the key to overcoming the crisis is accepting the proper embodiment of ‘Christian anthropo-centrism’ but rejecting ‘eco-centrism’ and ‘absolute anthropo-centrism’. Lastly, the abuse of resources and destruction of the earth constitute an injustice and a crime; therefore Catholic Social Teaching emphasizes that the participation of the faithful in overcoming the crisis is a demand of faith’.
