조선후기 고지도를 통해 본 大田의 장소성

국문 초록

본고에서는 조선후기 제작된 고지도를 중심으로 1900년대 초 근대도시로 형성되기 시작한 大田의 역사지리적 측면을 파악해 보고자 하였다. 먼저 대전 지역(회덕현·진잠현·공주목 동남부) 고지도에 재현된 입지적 특성과 관련하여 회덕현과 진잠현 지도 대부분이 보통 북쪽으로 인식되었던 지도 상단에 동쪽(회덕현)과 서쪽(진잠현)이 배치되어 있는 것에 주목하였다. 전통적 산맥체계상 錦南正脈 끝자락의 鷄足山과 鷄龍山 맥을 잇은 産長山을 지역의 상징적, 실제적 중심(읍치의 진산·주산)으로 인식해 온 지도적 재현으로 보인다. 그리고 관내 하천 대부분은 북류하다 대전 동편과 북쪽을 ‘ㄱ’자 모양으로 휘감아 도는 錦江으로 합류하는 형세를 취하고 있다. 다음으로 고지도상에 등장하는 지명을 정리하였는데, 지연지명으로 산지·하천·고개명 등이 그리고 인문지명으로 행정·교통·서원·정자·사찰·봉수·창고·제언·교량명 등이 확인되었다. 특히 현 대전광역시 연원이 되는 ‘大田’ 명칭이 행정명으로 사용된 기록을 『1872년 지방지도』(공주목)상에서 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

From the perspective of ‘pictorial turn’, the Korean traditional old maps could be a representation of the various forms and the multi-dimensional meanings related to the spatial phenomena. This study explored the historical geography of Daejeon represented on the old maps of the late Joseon Dynasty. Firstly I tried to examine the location of Daejeon focusing on the direction arrangement of old maps. For that time we have known the upside of maps is usually the North. But in case of Hoedeok and Jinjam of Daejeon, almost all of old maps had positioned the East and the West on which Jusanswere located as a symbolic and practical center of those regions on the upside of old maps. This interesting fact seems to be a cartographical representation of the traditional spatial epistemology like fengshui. Next I identified the place names on the old maps: not only the physical names such as mountains, streams, mountain passes, but human place names related to the traffic and religious facilities, pavilions, temples, storehouses, irrigation facilities, bridges and so on, including the administrative names. Especially it’s very meaningful to find the origin of Daejeon as a administrative name on one map, not textual literatures and documents.
