국문 초록

지금까지의 수많은 연구들이 영어독해와 언어구조에 대한 이해라는 이 두 가지 측면의 연관성을 주장해왔다. Demel (1990)의 하위구조의 중요성에 대한 주장 이 후, 다수의 영어구조 중 공지시적 관계(대명사와 대용사)는 영어독해에 있어서 매우 중요한 부분 중 하나로 인식되어왔다. 이러한 인식에도 불구하고, 아직도 많은 영어학습자들은 대명사와 대용사를 이해하는데 어려움을 겪고 있다. 이러한 어려움은, 부분적으로는, 영어와 학습자 모국어의 구조적 차이에서 기인한다고 볼 수 있다. 대명사와 대용사가 성과 수와 같이 매우 한정적인 정보만을 전달하고, 게다가 문맥을 기반으로 한 화자의 추정에 의존하고 있어, 영어학습자가 이를 이해하는데 겪을 어려움을 짐작하기란 사실 그다지 어렵지 않다. 이러한 맥락에서, 이 연구는 모국어의 구조가 영어의 구조와 상이한 집단인 한국인 그룹과 영어의 구조와 비교적 비슷한 것으로 일반적으로 인식되는 타 언어 그룹과의 비교를 통해 한국인 그룹이 보다 많은 어려움을 겪는지의 여부를 조사한다. 아울러, 본 연구는 Jacobs의 일반화와 Lasnik의 k-command이론을 통한 몇 가지 언어구조 분석을 통하여 영어학습자가 보다 명확하게 공지시사의 체계를 이해할 수 있는 방법을 모색한다.

영문 초록

A great deal of research suggests that reading comprehension is closely linked to the understanding of linguistic structures. Among many structural features, since Demel (1990) highlighting the importance of bottom-level structure, the area of coreferential ties (i.e., pronominals and anaphors) has been understood as one of crucial dimensions in reading comprehension. Despite the importance, many ESL leaners seem to experience difficulties in understanding them. This challenge is considered to have come from, at least to some extent, the structural differences between the English language and the learners' mother tongues. Since pronominals and anaphors convey limited amount of information such as gender and plurality relying heavily on the communicators' presumptions in the given contexts, it is likely that the ESL learners may find them difficult to follow. Given that, this paper investigates if the students from L1 with a different coreferential system experience more difficulty in understanding the system than the other ESL students who have a similar co-referential system. Additionally, the paper attempts to assist the ESL students to understand the coreferential system in explicit ways through the analyses of Jacobs's generalization and Lasnik's k-command theory.
