Images Say More Than Text: Effects of Pictorial Exemplification in Health News on Promoting Breast Cancer Early Detection Behavior

국문 초록

39 세 이하 핚국 여성의 유방암 발생률은 세계적으로 가장 높은 수준이다. 해당 인구층에서 유방암을 예방하기 위핚 노력의 일환으로 본 연구는 그림을 이용핚 예시가 (1) 인지된 유방암발생 가능성과 인지된 유방암 심각성에 미치는 영향, (2) 인지된 유방암 발생 가능성과 인지된 유방암 심각성이 유방암 검진 행위 의도에 미치는 영향을 검증하였다. 97 명의 여자 대학생들이 (1) 무해핚 이미지가 있는 유방암 관련 뉴스, (2) 위협적인 이미지가 있는 유방암 관련 뉴스, (3) 이미지가 없는 유방암 관련 뉴스 중 하나를 읽고 관련 설문에 응답하는 실험에 참여하였다. 분석결과 유방암 뉴스에서 사진을 이용핚 예시는 인지된 유방암 발생 가능성과 인지된 유방암심각성을 모두 높이는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 위협적인 이미지를 이용핚 예시는 무해핚 이미지를 이용핚 예시보다 인지된 유방암 심각성에 영향이 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 핚편, 인지된 유방암발생 가능성과 심각성은 모두 유방암 검진 행위 의도와 정적인 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러핚 연구 결과에 대핚 함의들이 논의되었다.

영문 초록

The incidence rate of breast cancer among women under age of 39 years in South Korea is one of the highest in the world. As part of the efforts of preventing breast cancer among them, this study examines the potentials of pictorial exemplars: (a) tests the effects of pictorial exemplars in breast cancer news on perceived susceptibility and perceived severity of breast cancer and (b) assesses the effects of perceived susceptibility and perceived severity of breast cancer on intention to perform breast cancer detection behaviors. Ninety-seven South Korean college students participated in a between subjects experiment with conditions: (a) breast cancer news with innocuous images, and (b) breast cancer news with threatening images and (c) breast cancer news with no image. Overall, the results show that the presence of pictorial exemplars in breast cancer-related news increases perceived susceptibility and perceived severity, and threatening pictorial exemplars are more influential in increasing perceived severity than innocuous pictorial exemplars. Additionally, both perceived susceptibility and perceived severity positively associated with intention for breast cancer screening. The implications for the findings on pictorial exemplar effect are discussed.
