영문 초록

The ratio of the total household consumption expenditures to the GDP in Korea has leveled off since the early 2000. In this paper, we introduce Employment-consumption Index, defined as an elasticity of consumption expenditures with respect to the number of the employed, to show how much the quantitative changes in employment contribute to the changes in household consumption expenditures. We find that the index for the thirties and forties has been unstable over the last 13 years, and for wage workers of the same age had positive values during the period whereas for self-employed workers of the same age had negative values. The index for the fifties and sixties, however, has been stable with positive values. We recommend that this constellation of facts be used for policy makers to boost the household consumption expenditures. Specifically, they should design and implement labor market policies to maintain stable employment-population ratios for the thirties and forties, to provide job securities for the fifties, and to improve the competitiveness for self-employed workers.
